“Rick Hansen, who has wheeled through thirty-two countries and five continents for his Man in Motion World Tour to raise funds for spinal cord research, will wheel. past the University of Prince Edward Island on Friday, September 26 at approxi- mately 3 p.m. Hansen began the Man in Motion World Tour because of his desire to eliminate the need for wheelchairs, braces, and other equipment used by people who have suffered spinal cord injuries. His goal was inspired by personal Man friend Terry Fox, who died of: cancer before completing his cross-Canada run to raise funds for cancer research. The Man in Motion World Tour was begun with these goals in mind: @ To create a world-wide awareness of the potential of disabled people. To create an international legacy fund for spinal cord research, rehabilitation and wheelchair sport. To demonstrate the tre- mendous value of sport and recreation as a form of rehabilitation. NEWS In Motion e@ Tocomplete an around-the- world wheelchair trek of 24,901 miles (the circum- ference of the globe). In terms of financial goals, the Tour hopes to raise a total of $10 million worldwide. The Prince Edward Island leg of the Tour began on Sept. 23rd, when Hansen was offi- cially welcome to the province at the terminal building in Wood Islands. On Thursday, September 25th, Hansen will travel to various destinations in Kings County. On Friday, he will wheel into Charlottetown for Tour ceremonies at City Hall and McDonalds Restaurant. As mentioned above, Rick’s route will take him past the Univer- sity Friday afternoon at ap- proximately 3 p.m. Saturday will find Rick wheeling into several communities in Prince County. Frank MacIntyre, Organiz- ing Committee Chairman for the Rick Hansen Man in Motion World Tour in Prince Edward Island, affirmed, “The committee, which has been at work for about four months, has focused on aware- ness; Rick’s touring, we expect will generate the dollars.’’ Activities ranging from benefit dances to craft sales have been organized all across the Island. In addition, the van which follows Rick when he is on the road will be manned by a couple of volun- teers selling t-shirts, golf shirts and sweatshirts from the back ofthe van. Finally, for the information of interested students, the UPEI Bookstore. will act as agent for the sale of Rick Hansen posters. There will be fifty posters available at a pur- chase price of $5.00.
