HASZARD'S GAZETTE, NOVEMBER 23. VABIETIES. Tea: Brats in SA-II.-I-).lIlIA.—'I‘IIe Geneva ' correspondent of the London Clirisfuin Times, in a letter to that paper, says:-— "Wishing to profit by the permission granted by the Sardinian Government with respect to admission of Bibles, the Bible Society of Geneva lately sent to Chambery two of its colporteurs, and such was the demand for the sacred volume, that in the space of a fortnight, in the two towns of Chambery and Antiecy, I500 copies of the Scriptures were sold by the colporteurs of the Bible society, and at the depot which Mr. Graydon, agent of ‘the British and Foreign Bible Society, es- tablished at the house of the editor of the Gleaner. Of these 1500 copies, about I000 were Bibles, and 500 Testaments- all of the French version of Saey.” A LOCOIOTIVI was lately run, for the first time, five miles on the Egyptian rail- road, much to the astonishment of the Bedouins, who galloped alongside on their fleet horses for some time, until they found they had no chance of keeping pace with the locomotive. Tris: following anecdote, illustrative of railroad facility, is very pointed. A trav- eller inquired the distance to a certain int. “ Dat ’pends on circumstance,” replied the darltey. “ If you gwine afoot, it ‘ll take you about a day; ifyou gwine in the stage or de homnibus, you make it in half a day; but you get in one of dose smoke wagins, you be almost‘ dar now ! " Paascavmc Eacs.—M. Appert’s me- thod of preserving eggs is to put them in a jar with bran, to prevent their braking; cork and hermetically seal the jar; put into a vessel of water, heated to 200 de- grees Fahrenheit, or 12 degrees below boiling. The vessel with water being taken from the fire, the water must cool till the finger may be borne in it; remove the jar. The eggs may then be taken out, and will keep for six months. The BIIST Msotcirse.-—Good, whole- some food and temperance, with pure, cold water to drink and bathe in, with fresh air, plenty of exercise, and a clear conscience, are said to do more to restore or preserve health, and prolong life, than all the doctors and medicine in the uni- verse. Hess urn Eaas.—The lllaine Farmer says a young hen will lay the first year about I50 eggs, the second I20, the third 100,-diminisliing every year as she grows older; and she should “ go to pot” after the fourth. ‘ Bus-r Foon I-‘OB. Fowr.s.—By exper- iments lately made on a farm at Neufcha- tel, in Switzerland, it has been proved that fowls to which a portion of chalk is given with their food lay eggs the shells of which are remarkable for their white- ness. Some hens, fed upon barley, would not lay well, and tore off each other's feat- hers. -The barley was then mixed with some feathers chopped up, which the hens ate and digested freely. By adding milk to their food, they began to lay, and cea- sed plucking each other’s feathers. Never give poultry or birds salt, or salt food; it is poisonous to them.
