Just before he left Prince Edward island the Journal was fortunate in getting an interview with Mr. A. V. \Lampson & Co., of London. to obtain ‘-in ilnwi ideas after visiting a very large proportion of the fox ranches of the island. Mr. Fraser‘s. experience in the marketing end of the fur business is not exceeded by any man in Amer- ica and be has had a truly wonderful opportunity of studying at first hand the business' from the producer’s standpoint. We therefore consider that his mature consideration of our prob- lems In the fox industry are of consid- land. The salient points- of Mr. Fraser’s conclusions may be concisely summed up by the' phrase "Breed, weed and feed." First in breeding great care should be exercised in trying to Improve the size and color of our captive foxes. To do this large foxes should be mated together and too much inbreeding shoufid be carefully guarded against. He also considers it wasteful to mate dark foxes with very light ones as the blue” black pelt is the most valuable on the fur market the very dark foxes should be mated tcgethe'r. With regard to weeding his idea is to kill off the inferior smailfl white appearances of being underfe u where bounfifuliy supplied the result is immediately apparent in the size and condition of the animals. Asked regarding s comparison be- tween' ourpelts and those of the wild foxes he statedthnt in our best foxes we have the equal not only in fur and color but siiso in size of the very best wiild ones. And as far as breeding is concerned we had the' very- great, ad- vantage of having a proved strain' which we could be sure would not ro- vert back to patches and reds' at any moment. It was noticeable' in ranches where non-standard foxes had been in- stalled that some' of the younger gen- eration showed s. distinct brownish shade which of course is very detri- mental to a pei; on s fur basis and it breeding with our best P. E. I., blood, that this danger could possibly be con sidered as past. With this in view Mr. Fraser was strongly of the opinion tba; carefully selected large welll fur- red blue black P. . I., foxes were the ideal basis with which to start a new ranch. ' The blood in some of the old P .E. I.. strains was so strong that by appear- ance alone it could be traced for sev- eral generations . - In this connection Mr. Fraser very strongly recommended the register- ation of all breeding foxes inasmuch as he anticipated a large demand for live foxes for breeding purposes after the wer in which case it would be al- mos-t essential that official records should be available to prospective purchasers. With regard to the sale' of pclts this year he felt that it was of vast import- ance to the lndustry that the produc- ers get together as closely as possible in the matter of marketing their pelts. For the time being at le`asl_ he con- sidered tbst the handling of the plete by the Belles Board was the logical method of procedure. Considerable lowering of values would surely result from promiscuous hawking of skins to _ *_-\i"? _pill .,_ 4 K6 it __ ‘Q l' _ T i I _ ` V .. \ an lf- ? §§_;___ REMARKAILE YIELD OF' per bushel for black oats 5Ilc for Hs had found me 9° 1° qu the black oat' on me aero. at laid. _"_ _‘___ noun arable supplies daily _of togetbox with Mrs. Fraser had enjoy ed the trip immensely and approciat » ed very much the kindness that had fglgfllfff §"§f_‘:_‘_’§ \>‘::R_°I=;. vhlnh - ci-lunch ssnvios.-nov. e. w. been shown mom.
