Interest in the coming rnillennlal of Alfred the Great is increasing the time approaches for the great celebration at \Vinchester the ancient. capital of the Saxons. Winchester is near Southampton, and at. Winchester Alfred held his court. H was born at \Vant.tge,Berkshire, in th year Sill, tiflh and youngest son of Ethel- wulf King of the West Saxons. Ethel~ wulfdied, 555 and was succeeded in turn 8.5 by three sons before Alfred came to the , rhronein STI. Alfred`s st-cry takes us well back towarrl the beginning of things in English monarchy, for Egbert, the drs t King of all Englilnd, was Alfred`s grand- father and reigned but nineteen yealrs. Alfred himself came to the thrcne at 22I years of age, reigned thirty years andl died in October 901 aged 52 yerrs. It is the thousandth anniversary of his death that is to he male the occlsion of a noteworthy celebration. Perhaps no man in the long line of Eng- lish or of British sovercigns more truly deserved the honorary title of Great than King Alfred. It was he who by skill and valor defeated the Danes in successive Wars and in many battles. On three hard fought tields in oil, at Ashdown, Basing and Merton, he fought under his brother, King Etflclred, against the common foe. At Wilton he ccmmzlnded as King. So far it has been a defensive I campaign. Seven years later he was still on the defensive, but conducted his war- greatvictory was achieved at Ethandum He followed up his advantage, re~organ- ized the militia, built ships of war, and was the first to obtain a naval advantage over the Vikings. His reign was already approaehirg its close, when after hard withdrawal of the enemy from his country in 'ca Aifred's administration was marked by judicial and educational reforms as great as his military achievements on land and sea. He compiled a code of laws, rebuilt the Danes, and invited scholars f~onl a‘l the seats of lee rning to his cor' t. He was himse’f a. man of lr.uning, and trans lated into Sa :on a considerable number of the best religious, philosophical, and historical works of his time. His was a well rounded character in which courage 'nd administrative ability of the first ,- class were adorned by a noble manllness, I true gallanLry,g.-eat patience, unimpeach- able integrity and love of truth. “Truth lover was our English Alfred’S name,” as Tennyson has sung. Tire secretary of th Jlcbration Committee, who is also the prcse:.t Mayor of \Vinchester, speaks of Alfred as “one who more than any other may be regarded as our greatest common anc;stor, and in times past the most per- f:':t hero of the whole English-speaking rucc." L; is we-ll that the name and fame of this far~oi’f` noble ancestor and his illus- ` trious example should be now ani here- tit-:r frequently recalled for the instruc- -ion and emulation of our people.
