' Hormones, especially the sex ones, "are probably the most abus- ed of all drugs, although vitamins and antibiotics are not for be- hind." Dr. Edwin F. Gildea of Washington University Medical School in St. Louis told the Am- erican Medical Association. The abuses "led to waste of mi- lions of dollars, and do immeasur- able harm to patients." This does not mean, he stressed, that there are not good medical uses for hormones. But he con- tended it hasn't been proved that the hormones, except insulin for Hormones Abused In Treatments shock treatments, have any value "in treating a majority of psychi- ntric px-1t,ients." , Dr. Gildea termed sex hormones the "most commonly over-explolt- ed" ones. An example, he said, is using hormones to treat fat boys or girls. when fatness really is due to over-eating, not to gland fail- ures. , "Impotence in the male is a fabulously-mistreated disorder," he said. "Most impotent men don't have any physical disorder, but are impotent because of psychological problems." Steps toward the appointment of a royal commission to make an economic and industrial survey of the Martime Provinces may be taken here tomorrow. The subject is expected to be prominent in discussion at an ex- ecutive meeting of the Maritime Provinces Board of Trade. The board will consider implem- entation of resolutions and policies favored at its annual meeting in Charlottetown in October. At that lime appointment of the commis- sion wns urged in a report present- ed by Dr. C. H. Blakeny of Mono- ton, a past president of the Marl- time organization. His proposal was approved by the Charlottetown meeting. in the past the provinces have carried out in- dividual surveys of such factors as electric power potentialities, ware- housing and land possibilities. Dr. Blakeny's proposal would involve consolidating such data on a Marl- time level, so that it would be read- urers who might be considering loc- atlng within the Marltimes. t It is expected a number of com- mittecs will be set up during Mon- day's meeting. Cl-IARLOTTETOWN BULLETINS FROM BIRDLAND WlNlFREl)'1:. mung , BIRDS HANDS Birds' hands do not look like ours, nor are they actually called by that word; nevertheless, there are three of them: two alike, and an odd one. The pair go by the name feet; the odd one is known as a bill or a beak: and they are all wonderful substitutes for hands. An Osprey or Fish Hawk dives feet first into water and catches fish in strong talons which are used as fingers, but are much bet- ter at holding slippery fish. The sales of its pale blue feet have a rough covering, and the claws are long and well curved. The fish is held in a manner unusual for birds: two toes turn forwards, two backwards. with their powerful feet other Hawks and the Owls hold down small bl1'ds or mice and tear them to pieces with their hooked beaks. Every bill is in two sections: an upper, and a lower which is mov- able like our own lower jaw. All are tough, with sharp edges. But they are of different types, de- pending upon the use to which they are put, and are of various sizes; yet all are made to be em- ployed like hands. The two sec- tions, or "mandibles", as they are called, are ordinarily about the same length, or the upper slightly longer than the lower. However, the Skimmer has a longer lower section, because it flies close to the water, apparently ”sklmming” small fish oil the top. A Merganser's long bill is fitted with tooth-like affairs for holding in the fish. 15 unusually capacious for the same reason. The Nighthawk and Swal- lows have short, flat, wide bills to grab flying insects in the air. Species that belong to the group known as Flycatchers have bristles or ”whiskers” at the corners .of their mouths to prevent. insects from escaping. As probing the ground for worms requires a special bill, nature sup- plies the Woodcock with one like long plncers. Woodpcckers have bills like chlsels for making holes 111 trees, and their excessively long tongues. used as fingers, pry out insects found deep down. The ex- tremely long bill of a Humming- bird antl its extraordinary ton- gue, which curls over on each side to form a double tube and also ends like a brush, delve into cup- shaped blossoms so the bird can suck up nectar. Both bill and feet get. to work when a nest is to be built. with these three hands, long pieces of gram. hair, string, or bark are woven together neatly and effici- ently. - Are birds ever white?
