WEATHER: Ice fog - Jim Jenkins reported that the extremely low tide and very cold temperatures in January, 1999 resulted in the ice freezing to river and bay bottoms in some areas of the Island. When the tide returned it flowed over the ice and an ice fog was created almost instantly. It is anticipated that there will be oyster and other shellfish kills as a result of this event. For those who looked closely at the brown clumps on the surface of the ice on many rivers and bays in late winter, the dead oysters and mussels were clearly visible. Smoke columns filled the air on certain days in Jan. and Feb. as landclearing operations removed forest cover to create more berry land (HG). A tributary to French Creek near Savage Harbour was overflowing its banks on Feb. 5 and again like never before on Mar. 2 (HG). Freezing rain with north wind on Feb. 19 and on Feb. 27 at French Village (HG). ANIMAL AND PLANT SIGHTINGS: COmpiled by J. Dan McAskill Plants: Dandelion in flower in Stanhope (MJ); willow catkins opened in Donagh on Feb. 12 (JDM); 10
