COLUMBIA RIVERS SWARMING WITH THE ROYAL FISH A New Westminster despatch says: This isthe year for the big run of salmon, which occurs every fourth year, and the F: river is literally alive with the silver beauties, which form so important a part of British Columbia's BRITISH asel wealth and her natnrul resources. On the 12th July the soock’ eye,the choicest of the salmon famty, were observed to be comiog up ther: in small lots. | Soon, however, their numbers increased pity that the| the finny| treasures ; and the canneries which are| runpieg are taxed to their utmost cap-| acity to pack the vast quantities of ish which are being caught, as they are coming by hundreds of thousands, No} such larwe and extensive run of salmon | has been known before. The river, from | ifs mouth to above New Westminster, is | studded with the fishing boats of the} various canneries. An instance, and| oae which is fully authenticated, is that | of a boat which took 384 fish in one} hanl, aod Commenced landing them on and with such wondertul : river is now chock full af the wharf in exactly fitty-tive minutes from the time of starting. The total average pack will be twenty thousand cases to each cannery engaged, making the probable total pack of the Fraser river canneries for this season from 120,000 to 130,000 cases. On Saturday last (August Ist.) Ewen’s cannery did the biggest day’s packing ever done on the Fraser river, canning a total of 1,400 cases in one day, the highest previous record being 1,275 cases. The canneries have being paying their fisber- men from three to five cents a fish, but owing to the plentiful supply fish bave been offered and soid for one cent each salmon during the post week, they be- ing willing to fecept such asm il price rather than throw the fish ovorboard. Taey claim that in previous seasoris the cost of packing has amounted to about 3.25 a case, while this season it will be reduced to from $2.75 to $3.00. If such is the « it is ceriain that a fair margin of profit can be made on the present ruling selling prices, which are $0.50 a case. Working on Sunday. When King George III was repair- ing his palace at Kew, one of the work- men, who was a pious man was particu arly noticed by his majesty, and he often held conversations with him of some levgth upon serious subjects. One Monday morning, the king weut Ss usux. to watch the progress of the work, «ud wot secing this maa in his customery place, inquired the reason of his .bsence. He was answered evas- ively, and for some time the other workmen avoided teiling his majesty the truth. At last, however, upon being more strictly interrogated they acknowledged that, not having been| able to ¢ mplete a particular job on the | Saturday bight, they had returned to} finish on the following morning. hs "his man alone, had re/used co comply, | because he considered it a violation of the Christian Sabbath ; and in copn-!| sequence Of what they called his obstin- | acy, he had been dismissed entirely irom his empioyment. “Call him back immediately,” ex- iairaed the good King. “The mas whowefused doing hi wdinary work on the Lord’s aay Is tn< iInao for me.
