Its population was 25,000, with 30,000 people in the adjuining towns and villages. The Cambric i steel works, located in Johnstown, employed 6,000 men, hada plant costing $5,000,000, and was one of the largest iron and steel corporations in the world. Some ten or tweive miles above Johnstown was an old reservoir used as a fishing reserve. This reservoir was made by a dam 100 feet high, 90 feet thick at the base, 20 feet at the top a fifth of a mile long, which created a lake three miles long and a mile and a quarter wide. This lake was an irregular oval in shape, and the volume of water depended upon the season. It was JUO feet higher than the Johnstown flats— twelve miles distant. Along the banks of the Conemaugh creek, which connected with and flowed through the Johnstown district, were located several manufacturing towns, with a total popula- tion of about 55,000 souls. “The great force of water on the dam, caused by heavy rains, broke down, and the mighty torrent rushed down the valley, sweeping everything in The sad results are now well known, and need not be referred to her. iron al mma thie lal LHiS iaKe iis Way. The indictec prisoner also told a story to Capt. — which involves Daniel Coughlin, the de tective, and Alexander M. Sullivan. Woodruff, alias Black, has virtually turned state’s eV idence, and will be one of the witnesses before the inquest 18 conclud- ed. Capt. Schaack’s testimony was the only sensational feature of the day's pro ceedings. ‘The captain equivocated on the witness stand and became indignant when the coroner's question got him RU oe parently uncomfortable position. Phe cap- tain tried hard to make the jury believe he did his best in the case and in connec- tion with Coughlin’s-** Smith ” story. A conference of the authorities was held immediately after the inquest, and Mayor Cregier issued an order suspending Capt. Schaack from active duty for disobedience of orders, in not getting Coughlin to bring in the man for whom the detective hired the white horse which conveyed Dr, Cronin to his fate. The suspension will no doubt be followed by the captain's discharge for gross neglect of duty and attempting to shield Coughlin. ‘* Woodruff sent for me the day the grand jury was in session on this case,” sarc Capt. Schaack to the coroner's jury. ‘* The prisoner told me he was in ” saloon on Division street, near Franklin street, ene afternoon with King and Fairburn when a strange man entered and took King aside. Woodruff said the man had a big roll of money, and that he gave some to King and more to Fairburn. They went out together and the strange man left them at the door. After he had gone W vodruff said he asked King who it was and King said ‘that is the great {lawyer Alec Sullivan.” Woodruff said that the man who hired him was Coughlin. He said that he drove to the cottage and took the trunk and then drove tou the catch basin.” ** What was it he said about Coughlin ?" asked a juror. ** He saidthat Coughlin came to him and asked him if he wanted to make $25. Coughlin also showed him where he was to meet them at a certain house at night. He said that on the afternoon of May 4 the detective came to him and said: ‘ Now’s the night it has has got to be done. If you can't get out befure three o'clock it will be no use.” Major Sampson, a north side character, a bad scrapper and gambler, swore that Coughlin tried to hire him to slug Cronin. Sampson's story was corroborated by Billy Lyon, another questionable character. Alexander M. Sullivan is virtually under arrest, thoughallowed hisfreedom withinthe city limits. The police want to guardagainst a release under habeas corpus proceedings by getting the strongest possible evidence nd a verdict of the coroner's jury against the lawyer before placing him under arrest. “Larry” P. Buckley, an ex-police captain, of Lake View, and a member of the Clan-na-Gael camp to which Dr. Cronin belonged, was closeted for several hours lately with thef authorities. He is one of the inside men, who have been suspected of a knowledge of the conspiracy, and the police have had him under surveillance for some time. He made some startling dis- closures to-night as to the part which the Cian-na-Gael men took in the con- spiracy. He has _ practically turned informer, and the whole inside history of the murderous plot is now known to the authorities, who will not be slow to make good use of their information. ><> - <a What a—-(Story)! For Neuralgia, a novel cure—which we hardly believe if true, will ever become popu- lar-—is vouched for, it is said, by a corres- pondent of the New York Sun. An _ Irish gitlin Paterson, N. J., had suffered with neu- ralgia of the head and face until almost frantic with pain; actually beating the wall with her head to cause insensibility. Her employer having heard that a Dr. Tere had cured rheumatism by the sting of a wasp, asked the girl if she would try it. With courage born of despair, she exclaimed ‘‘Any ether torture would be a pleasuro beside this.” A yellow wasp was obtained, and vexed into stinging her face. Within a few moments the pain ceased, the girl fell asleep, and strange to say, never again had an attack of neuralgia. Well, we don’t blame her.{ The remedy was probably too heroic for a second dose. A learned specialist when told this yarn remarked, “The pain may have stopped temporarily, but it could only have been temporary.” Contiuuned he, “it ig a fact that a sudden shock to inflamed and painful nerves wil! stop pain,” but the remedy is worse then the disease, as many unthinking people in after years find out, who apply fiery and dangerous compounds ex- ternally to stop Neuralgia and Rheumatism. They only continue to shock the nervous system, ignorant of the fact that, as in the morphine of alchol habit their mental and moral nature is thus being gradually destroy- ed. ‘‘Make haste slowly, if you expect to cure any nerve disease” was the advice to a lady by a friend who had been cured of chronic Neuralgia by using for some time Joknson’s Anodyne Liniment inhaled, taken internally, and applied externally, as advised in the wrapper around every bottle. Neu- ralgia is a fever or inflammation of the nerves, and only by degrees can any inflammation be cured; and then only by an anodyne treat- ment. Old Dr. Johnson had this in mind when be devised hia Anodyne Liniment; a remedy now known to nearly every one, as it deserves to be. Surely a medicine without real merit could not have survived for eighty years as this one has done. jl wyl dy6i —_—_-¢<o——__-__. Accident to a Steamer. QueBEc, June 9.
