PRE-CENSUS QUESTIONNAIRE All farm operators have receiv- ed a questionnaire from the Dom- inion Bureau of Statistics which has to do with the forthcoming census. The farmer is asked to carefully fill out this questionnaire and when the Census Enumerator calls at y r farm his or her time as well as your own will be great- ly facilitated. The coming census is a very important undertaking as it was felt with the changing of farm practices and the Increase in pop- ulation that a ten year period be- tween the taking of the census was too long-hence the decision to con- (".lCL a census this year. The information you give the Census Enumerator is strictly con- RUHAMAH S FRANK WE AND OUR NEIGHBORS COUNTRY LIFE AND PERMISSIVENESS Since we moved back to the rnuiitry a sentence has been beat- tnt.', its way through the day's act- ivities like a tom-tom: "The count- -y is better than the city; the toiintry is better than the city." Finally I tracked it down. In Grade V It was I who had fired the opening shot for the affirmat- ave in s debate of which the sub- lprt was "The Country Is Better halt the City." My ilonnrable Opponents will say that the City is better than the Country out 1 cont I that the country is aetii-r than the city. Sheep relish grass and graze very closely the most tender shoots while beef cat- tle will consume the coarser gras- ses to better advantage. Heavy milk producers require abundant nutritious ,...sturage. While lhel young stock can be maintained on somewhat coarser herbaE8- C00- sequently, different methods of ut- ilization are nee ssary. DAIRY CATTLE 0. of the fundamentals of dairying is liberal feeding. Dairy cows will decline in milk product- ion and lose weight when fed a ration that is sufficient or unbal- anced. Growing stock should re- ceive plenty of feed in order that they may develop normally. Nutritional. Requirements:- A good milch cow requires a large amount of feed to keep up her pro- duction. Cows weighing 1.000 pounds require about 15 pounds of digestible nutrients per day to maintain their weight and pro- duce one pound of butterfat. In order to get these nutrients they must consume from 23 to 24 lbs. of the dry matter of a balanced ration. Assuming the dry matter in grass to be around 24 per cent, these cows will have to consume 120 pounds of green herbage daily. If optimum milk production is to be obtained. abundant good quality pasturage must be provided. A pasture composed of grasses. clov- er, and alfalfa. is considered one of the best. Its production is abund- ant. and although alfalfa is not the most palatable herbs , its addit- ion to the mixture will generally increase the protein content and provide more green growth In dry periods. Pasture either permanent or in is crop rotation, will seldom furn- ish succulent herbage all summer. in Easter Canada, pastures are at their peak during late May. June, and the early part of July.
