> =. cane: RA AE Ty : ~ —_ — ~ ; The Wiarton Tragedy. EXPLAINED— WRETCHES. MURDER rHe GQUILTY Us . MYSTERI ARREST OF Owen Sounp, Ont, April 24.—James | King, Joh in Wilson an e Charles Me Cleary have bee arrested in eonnection with the horrible mur de committed about two miles | from Wia ton, about a month go, whereby James A. Bailey andj hired man, whose name is unknown, lost their lives. Ihe revolting and bloods urdlir 4 y } -on 7} remem bderea, ne mys sterious destruc vn of Baile ys house by tire, the dis-| very of the bodies of two men in the still burning debris and the horrible lisclosures made by the post-mortem examination, all tend to make the case one of most absorbing interest, especial- y 48 there was no clue to the perpetra ore. <a ve arrests Were made on @ yth of the confession of Ellen McCle on w hose family resided next loor to a and who kept house for the murdered man, The ravelling f the mystery isdue to the splendid work of detective Rogers of the Provin- cial force. Although “there was no clue to the tragedy he came to the conclu- sion that the McCleary family knew more about the matter than they cared therefore kept close watch upon their movements. A few days ago he saw Klien McCleary accompani- ed by a man, beard the train. They got off at Palmerston and registered at the hotel as man and wife. While they were out of the room, R ers eutered under the bed. 5S efter the eturned and commenced talking about the murder. After listening for a short time, Rogers crawled out from under the bed and arrested both the man and woman. The former geve his name as John McCarty. The girl thunderstruck and admitted to to detective that what he had heard was true. She subsequently made a state- ment to the effect that on the night of the murder King and Wilson came _ to Bailey's house and asked her if Bailey was at home. Kiog had previously told her that he intended to kill Bailey that night. Bailey hadn't returned from Wiarton and the men told her to go home, and then went intothe bush to wait for Bailey. She went home and sent her brother Charlie over to Bailey’s house to get the hired man out, as sne didn’t want to see him killed. She saw Kiog and Wilson return to the house about an hour after she left, and after- wards saw the fire. King formally lived with Bailey; bat had a row with him and leit. Both" were pal ratte ntion to Klies McCleary, Dee aad stated to the girl that as. 6 Sailey was to marry tm. ything about the affair before, as King had threaten- ed to kill her if she opened her mouth Miss McCleary aad ber companion were brought here and lodged in jail and the other arrests quickly followed. The preliminary examination of King and Wilson commenced last even ing. The girl again repeated the story aud her brother Charles corroborated to tell. He and vot 00 coup: the her statement tothe effect that she sent him to tell the hired man to come over to their place. The hired man would not come. This was just before the fire broke out. The trial was adjourned for a week. King has hada bad record. Four years ago he was arrested on the charge f mardering by poisoning, but was acquitted. Wilson on the other hand bears agood record and some believe he had no hand in the tragedy his sister and that girlis using him in the place ofa n ‘a named Stenioff who was stopping with her atthe time of the | fire and whom she is trying to shield. This belief is strengthened by the | question asked by Charles McCleary when he was arrested, “Whether Steinotf was arrested yet.” Steinoff, it will be remembered, acted very strangely at the time of the fire, and disappeared after the bodies were liscovered. He left the vicinity 3 few lays later, telling the ne ighbors he had | cen a oh st lt is thous oht Wi ilsou | will be able to prove an a ibi: it has} not yet transpired what part, if any, McCarty took in the affair. _— — il: <ite— = Ee _ Nova Scotia’s Gold Fields.
