By James W. Barton, M.D. m h&AvmVVVVr PENICILLIN HA8 REVOLUTION- IZED TREATMENT OF EAR. NOSE AND THROAT A few years ago one of the popu- la.r specialties in medicine was ear, nose and throat. particularly in our Great Lakes region. There were so many cases of nose obstruction. chronic sore throat, and loss of hearing or partial deafness. that these specialists were always busy. Unfortunately operations were common, sometimes leaving the patient with partial loss of smell because much of the lining of nose was destroyed. so many infections which started in nose and throat extended into the ear that the ser- ious operation of removing a part of the mastoid bone behind the car was necessary. Today operations on'esr, noes and throat are not common be- cause of the sulfa drugs and par- ticularly because sir Alexander Fleming's colossal discovery of the germ-killing effects of penicillin. In the Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine, Dr. A. C. Ftirstenberg states: "Penicillin has revolutlonired the practice of ear. nose and throat to such an extent that it now been only a faint re- semblance to its statute of ten years ago." Acute infections and abacus of is short course and prevent th. complications which occurred as often before the use of penicillin "The serious complications oz in. flamed mutoid (mastolditis) which comprised a significantly import- ant responsibility of ear, nose and throat practice, and hold the malol interest of these specialists tel: years ago, are rarely in evidence today." From the above wonderful results with penicillin. it would appear that not many of the medical students of the future will elect to become ear, nose and til at spec- lalists. Dr. nlrstv.-nberg states. however. that the future of the ear. nose and throat specialist is not dafk. There are great re- sources in this field which have not yet been tapped and these will be made available through scienti- fic research. Not only will lee: surgery be necessary but betfar re sulis will be obtained by penicfllis and other germ-killing methods.
