The application was made in a letier received through the hands of a newsboy. The ladder wae elevated 70 feet and two men wmounted it with two streams of water. The ladder suddenly collapsed, bending like a reed. Thetwo men were thrown in against Gordon & Keith’s large warehouse, ios which the exhibition was taking place, and to savetheir lives had tocling to the window sills of the fourth story for several minutes, tothe horror of the spectators. The men finally broke in the windows and crawled intothe building. The ladder was 70% properly guyed and this caused itto bend. It wasaclose call for the men. Simta, India, Oct: 28.—During the recent attack upon tribesmen who had occupied Dargai Ridge, one of the pipers belonging to the Gordon Highlanders, who were leading the attack, was shot through both anklee, rendering it impossible for him to walk. His wounds did not, how- ever, diminish bis ardour. Sitting amid the hail of bullets, he continued his piping as unconcerned as though he was on parade. This is only one instance of the coolness and bravery displayed by the Higklanders, which have called forth the praises of the commanders. Lonpoy, Oct 29.—The Daily Chronicle prints this morning a sengational telegram from Bombay, which says: “There is much speculation here as to the reasons for the withdrawal of the second battalion Koyal Irish regiment from Samana at Rawalpindi. It is asserted on one hand that the men sulked at the critical moment and refused to march further. On the other hand, Colonel Lawrence says that two companies were at the front with other troops on the day in question, while the remaining companies were retired by order of a staffoffier. This latter statement is contradicted from beadquartere, but it is asserted thatthe order was to advance ard not to retire. San Francisco, Cal., Oct. 27.—Much discussion has been caused here by the fact that the faculty of Cooper medical College declared that sixteen patients have been saved from consumption by Dr. Joseph O.Hir schfelder’s remedy. This cure is exytubercuiine, made from veal which has been saturated with turbercu- line. Hirschfelder has been experiment- ing three years to secure this lymph. Among the patients whom he hag cured is Thomas H. Williams, jr., the wealthy horee-breeder. All the other patients were carefully examined and al! were de- clared cured.
