George Coles and Francis K ‘liv, Esq. pated a far different turn of the wheel of political fortune. which the country has given, nor does it offer any cause for . « * i despondent reflections; and we are confident that our oppo- nents are not better pleased than we are. They not only ex- pected that a large majority would be sent to the new House oypposed to the party in power, but they foolishly imagined »* ¥ a | that scarcely a member would be retarned who had rendered | himself conspicuous as a supporter of the present Goyernment. They have lost some of their best men in the struggle. We| . bi | ; an unprejud ed review of the different returns, we have come | i | have lost some of ours. Yet, from a careful, and, we trust, to the conclusion, that the existing Government will be sus-} tained, not indeed by a majority as large as the friends of| Liberal principles could desire, but such an amount of support as will have the effect of continuing their opponents in the cold shades of opposition for four yoars longer. The active part taken by Protestant clergymen in introducing the su-called religious element into the recent struggle, has borne itsevii fruit for the time ; but just so surely as liberal | principles were won before the Island was blessed by the pre- sence of those worthies, so surely will they continue to gather strength long after a returning sense of duty, or the remon- strances of the members cf their’seyeral eommunions shall have suggested to them the propriety of confining their at-| tention within the legitimate limits of their sacred avocations. The natural effect of their open deviation from the clerical | path into the political arena has been to inspire with a more l hment to Liberal principles those Protestants in | ardent atta | opposition to whose political feelings their unhallowed ex: | ections have been with offensive e mspicuousness employed. ‘The result will, of é¢ourse, effect their usefulness as Ministers of the Gospel, by their improper interference in the struggle vf contending politicians ; and if the Catholics should unite— | as unite they vught — in Opposition tu the clerical agitators, rm would be the political influence of the Lochheads, the | nés, the Munros, McKays and Fitzgeralds? | lupes of some of these gentlemen in the Baltic and y. indeed, again be led as sheep to the slaughter ; | bu. let the Catholics and the intelligent Protestants—whose | attachment to liberal principles cannot be shaken, and who | will not yield to clerical tyranny in temporal affairs—become more closely allied than ever they have yet been, and let the ‘ ? ‘ ; ’ ; ° Catholics themsety be more true to each other—let the few | i | i | traitors who aid the enemy be disowned and cast away from the common brotherhood, to be branded as spies by the masters | hasely serve,—let this alliance be consummated, all th: Lochheads, and Sutherlands, and Munros, and | MeKays in the world cannet prevail against it. If they hav a taste for the dust and dirt of tempural strife, let them dof the robes they have already too deeply stained, and throwing | their hypocrisy and cané aside, openly proclaim their greater readiness to serve mammon and the world than the God whose | service they have degraded ; and having thus ended their career | in the Church—their incapacity for which is clearly shown by | their recent conduct—it will not take many days to determine the extent of their influence in the next political contest in | which they may engage. We have good reason to know that the more reasynable of the Tory party have expressed their unqualified disapprovai of the conduct pursued by those black- coated politicians; and liberal Protestants have Leen, and are, loud in their denunciations of the men who have, to a certain extent, brought discredit upon the churches at the altars of which thoy have been unwisely called to minister. Ix our present issue we can give for Queen's County only a | full and correet statement of the poll from its several polling | divisions, as the returns were made up on Saturday last at the | Sheriff's Court, and the successfal candidates declared duly | elected. Ve have accounts from some of the elections in| King’s and Prinee Counties ; but as the special votes are not | included in any of them, and as sume of the accounts them- | selves are far from being reliable, we consider it best to defer ! y ; - 3 the publication of them all, until we caa get a full and correct | statement from the Sheriffs’ returns. The declaration of re | turned candidates wil] be made at the St. Eleanor’s Court for | Prince County to-day ; and in Georgetown for King’s County | to-morrow, (Tuesday). We cannot, therefore, expect to get an accuraic statement of the returns until Tuesday or Wed-| nesday ev-nings. The following is the result of the polling | in the several districts of Queen’s County, We must pre- mise, that in the third district ef Queen’s County, the small number cast for the Bon. Mr. Mooney docs not at all indicate | the number of his friends and supporters. The evening pre- | vious to the election he sent letters to all the returning | officers in the district, stating that he did not intend to contest the election, and instructing them not to reecive any votes in his behalf.
