They would never do that again. They had been lucky. very lucky to get back to the water. Buster Bear had been almost sure or ii Goose dinner. I say almost sure because Buster long ago learn- ed never to be really sure of any- thing until he has it. One of the hardest things for boys and girls and for the Green Meadow and Green Forest folk ti learn is never to be careless. Even grown-ups have to learn that. and most of them never do. If there were no carelessness what a wond- erful Great world this would be. And what a happy world! carelessness and sadness alwnys go together or almost. always. if there were no carelessness there would iie much less sadness and much nmrc. oh the world. llonker had led the ilOt'k a long distance that day. it iias the long.- est day's (light. that they had you made and the young.Geese were tired. snywcre the older ones foi that matter. It. was almost da)'k when they settled on the writer and they were almost too tired to eat. A Goose too tired to eat after a long day in the air IS really tired. There was very little gabbllng as they ate, and Geese dearly iOV(' to gabiilc. so you may Judge how very tir d they were. Just as they did every nigh. Hooker and Mrs. Honker warned the young Geese to be careful not to sleep Lco near the shore. but to swim out where the water was, fairly deep. They had heard that so oiten that some of the young Geese paid no attention. Too much izood advice sometimes is no better than none at all. It isn't listened to. Advice not listened to is wast- ed. One young Goose was inclined to be careless. He always had been caieiess. not very careless as some of his brothers and sisters seme- times were. but just. a little carc- iess in all he did. it was a habit i1 bad habit. but. so tar nothing really had happened from his care,- lessness. Perhaps that is why he got to thinking that being Just ia little bit. careless didnt matter This evening he was one of the last. to st:-p eating. it seemed to him that his fatlicr. wise old Honk- er. was extra fiissy about how and where they should sleep. He didn't see any sense in swimming out so far. It would he much nicer close in share. He didn't. go straight put as the others were doing. He pad- r'lcd along near shore tnward an old tree that had blonu down nl'i'i lay partly in the water. He had been warned never to go cicse to old logs partly in the water. or fal- len trees leaning low over the wa- r. Perhaps he didn't intend to go close this time. Pi-rimps il': thought everythln: looked all r'igiit. Perhaps he didn't think at all. Per- Imps he just iorgot. Anyway. he swam rioser to that tree than he should have before turning to join the others. There was a sudden great. splash in the shallow tvnter over by the tree, a frantic beating r-I great wings. a scream of fright that. end- ed abruptly. In the dusk a SiT3dOVtfJ form that seemed to have no tail dragged the young Goose. who once too cften had been a little bit too careless. out of sight among the Blask Shadows on shore. "It. was Tufty the Lynx." said Honker sadly to the frightened Cdntliiued.oVn,Opia;;e;l6 - TRY CLITICURA FOR ITCHING SKIN See how nrnmvtlv Cuticurn Soanuid Ointment bnnizrelie! to dry. itching skin.
