contest between the many fast horses
that were entered for the races. There
was good trotting done and judging
from the number of fine horses that
were there this lslsnd bids fair to be-
come in the near future prominent as a
producer cf fast horses.-Christmas has

to our minds the many hallon ed associ-
ations of that season, and giving to us
another opportunity of renewing that

Pltaci' M. Jarrnair, center of the
Harvard University football team,died
suddenly last week from an attack of
spinal meningitis. Hr. Jaffray was 21
years of age and his home was at Iiv-
ington-on-the-Hudson, New York.
Wiwnrno Canute.-A brig-'it party
met on Dec. 27th. at the residence of A
Stewart Burns, Esq. Lower,Freetown,~
to witness the marriage of his young-
est daughter, Clara. to Fred. W. Tay-
lor, son of \Vm. Taylor, Esq., of the
same locality. The party was large
and agreeable. and the bride and gloom
presented ~..n appearance awakening
much appreciative comment. The
br.de was very prettily dres-ed in white
lustre, trimmed with chiffon and satin
ribbon, with white jet ornaments and a
tasteful bridal veil, adorned with ap-
propriate blossoms. Rev. W. H. War-
ren performed the marriage ceremony.
Cordial congratulations were extended
to the 'happy couple. and a large num-
ber of elegant presents showed the es-H
teem in which they are both held in the
community. A well mepared repast
was served. and the orc ision was honor-
ed by a first-class hobgohlin serenads
by local comedians.
A counnsrosnnivr writes that a
dreadful accident, and of such a nature
that it might have proved fatal, ceurred
to Mr. Allan McLean, an elderly gentle-
man residing in Alberton, Lot 14, on
Monday, the 26th inst. ' It appears that
threshing was going on, and Mr. Mc-
Lean was stationed on the upper loft
of the barn receiving the the straw that
was being passed above. The machine
vat stopped fora few minutes and thel
old gentleman was endcavoring to get
down, when in reaching for a beam he
missed his hold and instantly fell with
considerable force on the barn floor be-
low, his head and shoulders first
sriking. For some minutes he, lay
motionless but shortly regained con-
sciousness and was removed to his re-
sidence near by. His suffering was in-
tense, the injuries being largely it.-te~-
nal. It is thought that no bones were
broken. The parties working in the
building at the moment thought a stone
or piece of timber had dropped, the fall
sounded so heavy. How the man
escaped instant death is almost a
miracle considering the distance and
at itude in which he fell. It is hoped
that he may soon recover from the
effects of the terrible shock. ‘
