Tan 26-eod ¢w2e Orrawa, Oot., Feb. 20.—The Depart ment of tne Interior is engaged in sending out the first consignment of the new den : - 1 W " C — A @riptive atias of estern Canada. An aduition of 200,000 is to be printed, bu before o the issuing number, Mr. Sifton would do going expeaore of such a large well to stop the press aod revise bis mape. The idea of issuing an atlas of this kind is a good one, but with competent officers in the department and reliable data at band, there is no reason why an inaccurate pub leation should be given to the world vear ing the inscription, “Isened by authority Hon. Clifford Sifton, Minister of the luterior.” An examination of the caps reveals the fact that they are ‘‘made in Chiesgo.” In this respect Mr. Stftou has but followed the example of the Minister of Finance and the Postmaster-General, the first of whem gets his Dominion bills done by Americans, andthe latter his postage slat pr U. 8. BOUNDARY CLAIMS SHOWN. Canadian engravers, lithographere, and printers will appreciate toe compliment which the Government is paying them. The worst feature ot the ailas consists in the fact that the maps show American claims inthe dispute over the Canadian Alaska boundary. Evidently the error hae been pointed out to the department, as upon the last page ofthe cover sppears thie notice: ~“The question of the boua- dary between Canada and Alaska is nodecided. The boundary lines shown on meps are as claimed by the United States.” But what an admission this is. One would naturally Lave thought tbat it would have been more patrioticto bave presented the Canadian aspect of the dispute. In other respects the maps are very defective. The boundaries of the new dietricts in the North-West, viz., Ungava, Franklin, Mackenzie, and Yukon, which were created in October, 1895, are very inaccurate, which Newfoundland is given a large slice of Canadian territory in Labrador. As regards the letter=press, tie mis- cellaneous information shows very care, less preparation. Under the headieg **Canadian Cities,” there are references to Montreal, Toronto, Quebec, Halifax, Wiunipeg, Vancouver, and Victoria, but Ottawa, Sir W Ifrid Laurier’s “Washing- ton of the north,” is omitted altogether so also are Hamilton, London, Kingston, St. Joho, Fredericton, Cia) ue ows, Kh x ua, etc. In one place the population of Win-~ nipeg is stated tobe 32,000, and in an- other place 35,000. On the margin of one map the interest~ ing statement is made that Ottawa is the capital of Ontario. On the wargin of the map ofthe North West Territories about 250 places are mentioned as “‘caief cities,’ among them being such well known cities as Bull’s Head, Chino, Clover Bar, Bienfit, Goore Lake, Dongola, Gul) Lake, Piocher Creek, e'c. Manitoba is credited with 122 “Chief cities.” 1899 DIARIES. Canadian and Amrican Excelsior DIARIES all sizes for the POCKET OFFICE or HOME. P. E. I.
