The Talented Mr. Ripley (7.5) Directed by Anthony Minghella A young master of deception named Thomas Ripley (Matt Damon) scams an expenses-paid trip to Italy froma wealthy New York shipwright (James Rebhorn). Tom’s mission is to seek out the shipwright’s son (Jude Law) and to convince him to return home. Tom has other plans, which lead to more than he planned. Damonis very good, but Law gives the film’s best performance asa spoiled American. And Philip Seymour Hoffman has officially The Cimephile by Jeff Coll become my favourite actor under the age of 35. The scenery is beautiful, as the film follows Tom around many of Italy’s cities. Anthony Minghella’s first film since The English Patient is a well-executed thriller, worthy of Hichcock, as well asa first-rate period piece. Being John Malkovich (8) Directed by Spike Jonze A down on his luck puppeteer (John Cusack) gets ajobasa file clerk and discovers a hidden door in his office. The door allows a person to enter into actor John Malkovich’s brain for fifteen minutes, after which one is spit out next to the New Jersey turnpike. He capitalizes on the portal witha woman he is very attracted to (Catherine Keener), but the woman is attracted to his frumpy wife (Cameron Diaz). Malkovich, who usually plays more dramatic roles, proves he can do comedy, playing the most difficult role in the film. Every moment of the film is unpredictable and against the conventions of film. Spike Jonze’s feature film directorial debut is by far the year’s most original and daring film. a a Panther Lounge TTS MCLE LTE Jan. 21 Flush PE MPA TTR RE LTE Lh TT TL Jan. 20-22 Richard Wood Ura ere TSR CC aC A CUS Jan. 21 John Curtis Sampson PR yay Cm ey PMs ge Jan. 29 Poppa Shine Baba's Lounge PURE TTT TH PT MPA ICAL Jan. 22 Christina & Sonic Roots MPC te PT MPa He eth Jan. 28 Dysfunktional Dads Last chance to make a scene at the National Theatre School of Canada!
