Ran to Bay Verte on 19th to avoid ice. Prince Edward left (for, England this 2p. m. ee Anovr midnight, Wednesday, Mr. John Quirk, of the City Steam Bakery, Prince Street, was aroused by strange noises in his yard. Suspecting burglars he, in company with his sons, proceeded to investigate but could not discover anything. They retired to rest again, but about an hour _later were once more aroused by strange noises. On going into the yard to see what was the matter, they made the discovery that a ladder had been carried from a distant part of the yard and placed against the sill of the window of the bedroom occupied by the servant girl. They also saw & low-sized man run from their yard int» that of Dr. Jenkins, adjoining, and disappear. One of Mr. Quirk’s sons then went to the front door, on ,Prince Street, to see if he could find out where the man had gone to. After being there a short time, he noticed a man turn around Cox’s corner and come in the direction of the house. This man Mr, Quirk in the doorway, bid- ding him “-Good-night,” and went down Prince Street. Shortly afterwards, the resi- dence of Mr. Thomas Smith, on the corner of Prince and Water Streets was attacked. The window of the bedroom occupied by the servant girla was opened, and a man entered the room where they slept. The noise of enter- ing awoke them, and they screamed for help and the man was identified. This morning a man named Harley was arraigned before the Stipendiary Magistrate, charged with both offences. The evidence in the first case was not strong enough and he was acquitted. In the Smith affair it was proven that Harley had boarded ‘here for several years, occupy- ing the room now occupied by the servant girls, and that he had entered the room under the influence of liquor, more from force of habit than a desire to do any harm. Taking these cireamstances into consideration His Honor c-vided not to inflict a penalty for that offence but, instead, would fine him $30 or thirty dsys’ imp for being drunk ut after hours. autl out TELEGRAPHIC NEWS.
