Darrach, of Kingston, N. B., was awakened by an unusual light shining through her bedroom window. Her, husband run down stairs in bis night clothes and found that hot ashes had set the porch on fire. His night garments caught tire, and he was frisht- fully burned about the body and head, falling insensible in the snow outside. The house and contents were burned to the ground. Darrach lies in a critical condition. > -— Unsrrep Sratres Mriit1a.—The Secretary of War has transmitted to Congress a tabulated statement of the militia force of the United States, which shows that at the last returns there were 83 general officers; 1,105 officers of the general staff; 1,638 officers of the regi- mental field and staff, and 5,385 company officers; making a total of 8,310. commis- sionee officers. There were 18,33] nov-com- missioned officers, 2,900 musicians and 71,397 private, making in all 92,627 enlisted men and « yrand total (officers and men) for the militia force of 100,837 men. The yesterday afternoon de- stroyed nearly 300 residences and places of business, and unhoused from 1200 to 1500 people. In the fali of walls many persons were buried under the debris. ‘Thirty-five were kuled and twice as many injured, ten seriously. Previous to’ the destructive wind there was a heavy fall of rain for half an hour, which dreve all the inhabitants to shelter. This rain was fol- lowed by a freezing hail. Then a fvrious blow, which formed into a funnel-shaped cyclone, struck the south-western part of the city, unroofing everything in its path and taking a diagonal -course through the business part. The Senate in secret session to-day listen- ed tothe reading of the Fishery Treaty. Then for an hour ensued an earnest but unsuccessful struggle to make it public. The lead in the matter was taken by Sen- ator Frye, of Maine, who is anxious that his constituents be informed authoritivly of the terms of the treaty. The motion would have been successful but for the discovery that the Senate was powerless in the face of its rules to makethe treaty public. The Crown Prince's Health. San Remo, Feb. 20.
