The soap-boile_'r’s agent have long been allowed to carry away the most valuable fertilizer produced by the farmer, and leave in return peer brooms and worse tea. any an anti-book fhrmer has hauled plaster miles to his firm, and paid a hi ll price for the lathe, when there was no ack of the ele- ment in his soil, and he was but “ can-_ving coal to Newcastle," while at the same time he sold his ashes at 10 cents per bushel, ' price, ' soil being] exhausted of tash. It is no wonder that islands should ome “worn out,’ and himself exceed- inklv d.issat' with the seasons and moon. very plant contains inorganic elements, which are. as all know, indispensable to its growth ; these elements are the ashes of the ants. Those resulting from the com- bination of wood contain many of the most important constituents of both the grains, grasses and roots. VVheat and corn con- tain alarge proportion of potash,consequent- l , ashes are a most valuable manure for those crops. Filly-nine per cent. of the ashes of corn is com sed of the carbonate of potash (perlash The abundance of this ' dient in wood ashes constitutes their great value as a fertilizer for that im- portant crop, which value as a general rule up double that of plaster. I have used both, ssparatel and mixed, and find that a com- pound o two b els of ashes and one of plaster, ive a better result than either when app ied singly. I take ti small shovel, with which I put about I ill upon each hill ; I carr the ashes into t e field upon a barrow, an use a pail to distribute them from. The best method of application, is to put it on the hills immediately alter lanting, which precludes the possibility of? injuring the ting plants, as is sometimes done by app ying the mixture after they had come up. cm to whic this mixture has been applied, will ripen several days earlier and ive a_ much greater yield than rows through t e same field which are not so treated. One half of the earthy matter of potatoes is pure potash, from which fact any person can see their value as a fertilizer for this crop. It is from a lack of potash that many vnrnamaav raacflcn, l Under the Patronage of His Excellency Sir Anuxannan aiuuiaasau. A’-u'gM. Ifa farmer has in his soil potash enough to form 200 bushels of puta- toes er acre, and other constituents suflici- eut or 300, it is evident that the result will be a'Ioss of till) which the application of ashes would have prevented. Such cases often occur. Yet, in a ton of potatoes there is but I2 pounds ofpotash ; thus it will be seen that the cost of the ashes necessary for the production of the other 100 bushels would have been but trifling. Ashes should never be mixed with barn- yard manure, as they contain caustic alkali, and will neutralize the acid which fixes the ammonia in the manure, _setting the latter tifee, to the great do ieciating of the value ofthe manure. I wil conclude by advising my readers to save your ashes, no! or the soap-boiler, but as food for your ungry crops, and if you have an neighbours who pro or 12} cents to a bushel of ashes, you will find it a profitable investment to make the exchange.
