Sparked.by dimin— utive Mike Connolly's ball carrying and Jay Mingrove's outside shooting, the Pan— thers led 12 — 2 after 5 minutes. Another time out and crafty Packy must have arrived at the solut- ion as our bubble seemed; to burst and a few minutes later we trailed 29—30. The half ended 45-44 for the "Bad Guys" and althoUgh we never stopped trying the second half was a diff— erent story and we went down to a respectable de— feat 86—78. Our shooting from the floor was good throughout the game and nothing short of phenominal during the first half. Saturday's game was a diff— erent story as we were \ 'never in contention and did not get a basket from' the floor until the 11 minute mark to make it 24— 10 for them. The Panthers had a lot of shots but 5while‘Dame Fortune smiled on Friday she certainly frowned on our efforts on Saturday. We heard Brian Heeny class X on a par with S.M.U. and Acadia for this season as he said, in a ’._ radio interview, that they had done a lot of recruit- ing. From this we believe that Our team looked good and showed class even in defeat and, we think, will give lots of chance for cheers throughout the sea— son. We'd like to comment that Mike Connolly (5'8" with elevated soles and heels) must be the best player in the league...inch for inch ...although outdone in height by players who often have a 12 or 14 inch advan- tage over him he is always an eye—catching performer. fie were watching him yes— terday and the thought came to us...just imagine what he'd be like in a league where HE had a similar ad- vantage of the opposition ...such a league might be hard to find but it is an ‘interesting speculation. We didn’t see either game but we are told that in Friday's game goals were scored by Ray Dunn, ' Phil Clayburn and the winn— er by Lorne Carmichael. On ,Saturday it was Dave Murn— aghan potting two with sin— gles going to Len Kelly and Phil Clayburn. We were not able to reach Jack Kane for comment but we were told by a spectator that Wayne Bernard was the outstanding player on the ice. We trust there will be a large crowd on hand this weekend when the Hockey Panthers make their local debut against Memorial in two games. The Newfies always have a big rugged team and we should get a good line on how our ‘ boys will show up in league play this season...Go Pan— thers...Go!
