HASZARD’S GAZETTE, SEPTEMBER lgcgndllil. ’I‘lisrr- is another and still more impor- ,,.,i distinction, and this is of the thinking sad the initliinlting, or rather ofthese qualified to think, and ,, judge, .tsd of those who from a variety of contin- Fncies, are unable to comprehend and decide upon inntisre .....r......ii,'or great intricacy. and sometimes battling ilie understanding of the most informed and considerate. How many of those whom it is purpo- sed to assemble on 'l‘liursda y, are capable of forming it correct decision on twoqnestions, upon which, men the must enlightened, the most iuforincd, and best qualified to judge, are unable to come to s satisfacto- gy conclus. ut Who will appear on the platform there capable of -ulightening the ignorance of the great mass of those present? particularly if it be as anticipated. and fondly wished, a iiioustsr iiiesting— like all iusfieru. deficient in intellect, and obedient to the caprice of the moment, rather than the voice of reason. Aud in what time is this monster meeting to be con- vinced of the necessity of instructing their represen- tauvea to pursue one particular course is preference to another! Six hours at the very outside, during which time, none but those immediately round the husttugs or the platform will have heard one word in ten. How many persons will be able or willing, to address this highly respectable end enlightened audience .’ It will soon be seen who are, or are likely to be the majority, end as usual at all those miscel- laneous seseinblages those who are at all likely to be in the minority, will be liooted, interrupted, end cried down, a small mob of partisdus around the bust- ings will easily etl'ect this. How many of those pre- sent who can heat will be able to comprehend the argu- ments, if they condsscend to use any, or even the language, of the speakers? how many who under- stniid eugliah imperfectly and who will have no one capable of enlightening them its to what is going on, and lastly what will be the proportion of those who are really and truly electors and those who are not? Under all these circumstances therefore, whet ought to be the conduct of the members elect? Simply, we should say, to hear all and any nothing. 'I‘his will be a party meeting without doubt. and even if it were not, it could not be expected to express the sentiments of the majority of the Electors. It may, and pro- bably will happen, that those who takes different view of the matter, will call it meeting at another and tiiore leisure time, more uumerously attended than the one expected to be held to morrow. The man who needleuly allows fettere to be placed upon his hands or hie feet, can hardly be said to be in his per- fect niiud. as little can he besaid to be wise. who puts or sufi'ers fettere to be put upon his will or his tongue. It is the duty of the Representatives of the first District of King's County to avoid giving pledges to either party, as much us it is their duty to hear what either side advance, and togiie to both their most careful consideration. They will in this case go into Parliament free and unfettered. and of con- sequence looked up to with respect. If they make themselves the tools of a party, and that composed of. not the nice! sensible and enlightened of their con- stituents, and led by others not themselves. the re- verse will itisvitably follow. We have hitherto taken it for granted, that, the insmbere elect will not be so far forgetful of their own dlgnity, as to think of at- tending a meetiitg, the calling of which iuiplies a want of confidence. or a desire to dictate, though indeed there is another and very cogent reason why, they should appear there, and this is simply, because they tI7'¢ not invited. it being the electors and not the elected. that are requested to form themselves into this monstrous meeting.
