LN ON CN Et OLN tt Ne al ta ~ ' ' ' 83, FEBRUARY! IS80. STOCK-TAKING. W* hereby inform the pub- lie of this city, and the Island generally, that previous to Stock-taking, we have re- solved to clear out as much of our Winter Stock as possible. We are aware that at this season it is hard to get people to buy even at reduced prices; but in the face of this difficulty we have made up our mind to adopt full measures, and sell our Wool Goods and Dress Goods at a sacrifice. Our Goods have been very cheap all winter, as the run of trade we have had fully testifies. Our store has become the resort ‘of those Ladies who know how tomake a penny go a long way, and who know a cheap article when they see it; and when we say we are going to reduce the prices of our Dress Goods and Trimmings, we know we shall be believed. We are particul- arly anxious to clear out our present Stock, in order to intro- duce as much of the newest style of Dress Material as possible, and at the very lowest prices. We shal! make special prices on Black Cashmeres, Black Meri- nos, Black Cords and Lustres, Lustrines and Brilliantines. Our Fancy Wool Goods will be sold at less than cost. Our Stock of this class was the larg- the city, and the remains of it will be sold at a great sacrifice. Blankets, Quilts, Horse Rugs, &e., will be cleared out at great Bargains. We make no apology to the Tea-drinking public for drawing their attention to our fine flavored and rich Teas, 32, 36, and 40 cents per lb. They are ‘receiving the highest praise, and those who use them, strongly recommend them to others. Our trade in this article is growing rapidly, Tea appeals to the most subtile of the senses, and as the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so the proof o: the Tea is in the drinking. Dear Sin, —Efforts have been made to establish Fa:tories, in this Province, within the past fev years, Our Leeal Parliament has been ap; ealed to for Acts to Incorporate a ** Boring aid Mining Company, ‘a ‘‘ Starch Factory,” and other enterprises. Those Acts have, like many others, been placed upon our Stitutes, there to remain 2s wmonn- ments of ths ignorauce or inéapacity of their promoters. This, however, need not deter ooo men, possessing a th rough know- edge of their business, tae tories iow midst. The bur , Machrn- ery and proverty, known as the ** Spring Park Brewery,” 18 oftered for sale, and can be pur- chased tor ess than one half the estimated amount whch the promoters of the contem- plated ‘‘Starch Factory” placed upon it last year. A wore desirable property could not be selected for the establishment of a Boot and Shoe Factory. It is estimated that the sup- ply of boots aud shoes which our own popula- tion of 90, or 100,000 require, amount to at least $300,000, all of which we pay to Cana- dian manvfacturers, We have all the raw material ia hides, sheepskins, calfskius, etc., required to supply a tactory of this kiud. There is not a city in the Dominion where a Boot and shoe Factory could be conducted at less expense than at Charlottetown. Here we have cheap laber and all the essen- tial faciities for etiiciently and suc- cessfully conducting this enterprize. But we lack men of enterprise and publie spirit, who are not afraid to invest their capital in manufacturiug industries. Hence the cause why we do not realize more fully the direct ben2tits which flow from our National Tariff. There is no industry that could be more successfully conducted in this Province than the \nanufacture of bvots and shoes, the growing demand for which. even by our own people, would so greatiy increase every year as to place such an enterprise, properly men- aged, bey md the possibility of fadure. Woald it not then be far better for those who are constantl; decrying the National Pelicy to advocate the necessity and advantages that would accrue to our people from the establish- ment of local industries, fostered under a protective tariff, rather than continuously whining over imaginary grievances existing only in tae imaginations of disappointed poli- ticians. Yours truly, MrcHAnNic, To the Editor of the Kxaminer. Sirx,— It is remarkable that the mythol- } ogy of tie ancient Greeks teemed with the idea that the son or sons of the highest, such as Hercules, went through many labors and hardships, that they “‘went about leing good,” and that eventually they ascended to Heaven. In this perversion of the reat truth of redemption, the great evil spisit has indeed been active and inde- fatigable ; but there are analogies between ment aid the final fulfilment of all the types in the verson and advent of the Redeemer. For instance, Samson, overthewing the great men of the Philistines, may, at humble dis- tance, remind us of the overthrow of Satan by the sacrifice of our great High Priest. Tie st'ange foreshadowing of Christianity and Mahometanisin in Isaac and Ishmael, is ancther analogy. We are too apt to neglec; the Old Testament, and still more apt to overlook the books of Apocrypha, which indeed contain great truths and sound wisdom; especially the Book of Ecclesiasticus, chapter 23rd from verse 20 ito 23, inclusive, eught to be read and pon- ‘dered by all fathers of families. if our ‘faith vere firm en the New Testament, and ‘our worldly wisdom founded upon the Bible. including the Apocrypha, it would ‘ba a blessing to us, beyond ail price.
