Reports from the various constituencies are most
favorable to the Government. It is confidently antici-
pated the Government will be sustained by an increased
majority, variously, stated at 8 or 10. Premier Arsenault,
in addition to being personally the most popular Premier
since Confederation, 'has made good as an administrator
and the feeling is steadily growing that it would be a
mistake to transfer the reins of government to another
at the present time. The Governmentfs record is mag-
nificent and the policy outlined in the Premier’s admir-
able address to the electors indicates that a continuance
of the progressive policy may be looked for.

The popularity of a man in his own home town is a
sure indication that he is A1 at Lloyds. Premier Arsen-
aulthas stood that test with remarkable success. In his
home poll in the Third District of Prince he has increas-
ed his majority at each election, and at the two adjoin-
ing polls he has had the same pleasant experience. in
Summerside, where he has lived and practiced for a
number of years, he has gained a wide measure of pop-
ularity, and in Charlottetown, since assuming the Pre-
miership and coming to reside here, he has steadily gain-
ed the regard and esteem of the citizens in a very marked
degree. Mr. Arsenault’s sincerity, industry and pleas-
ingpersonality have undoubtedly made things 'run
smoothly and successfully since his advent to the,Pre-
Opposition at the close of last ‘session of the Legislature
-a unique experience for any Premier in this province

The Patriot twice this week repeats its wild
statements regarding theprovincial debt. -The provin-
cial revenues and expenditures are given from 2nd De-
cember, 1911, to 31st December, 1918, then by deducting
the total of receipts, as made up, from the total expen-
diture within these dates an excess of expenditures over
*receipts of $111,861.69 is shown and naively pronounced
'this assumption all kinds of fantastic calculations are
framed up. Even the figures quoted are not all correct,
but lest that pass. But the Patriot deliberately with-
holds the important fact that included in these expendi-
tures are the payments into the Sinking Funds,'which
are yearly made to reduce the Debenture Debt. It may
beasked, why is it done that way? The answer is the
statutes-authorizing the several issues of debentures re-
quire that certain payments shall be made annually for
that purpose. To do otherwise, as had been done for
years under the late government, would be a breach of
law and of faith with the bond-holders. From December
2nd, 1911, to 31st December, 1918, the debenture debt
has been reduced $124,634.96 by amounts thus placed in
the, Sinking Funds by the present Government, which
more than offsets the Patriot’s bogus increase of debts
of $111,861.69.
We will give the Bankers’ statements of our finances
,Von December 2, 1911, when the change of government
took place, and also on the 31st of' December, 1918.
~These figures are made up alike in both cases and show
up our finances in a plain reliable manner. We challenge
disproval of them by any responsible banker or account-
ant. The indebtedness was placed as follows in each
case:

The Bankers did not, in either case, deduct the rev-
enues due, as no one could tell what they were-exactly
worth. But besides the, debts given on December 2nd,
1911, there remained the Lowe claim and other undis-
closed amounts of over $8,000.
The public by this statement has a plain exhibit of
our finances, and further reference to the debt by us
should be unnecessary.
