Vxr.uu or x Bttotrau Pass or GL.tss.—A question, now universally asked in every so- ciety in Paris is,—“ Have you seen tlte bro- ken window?" This refers to an accident of a very ordinary nature, followed however, by an infinitely improbable result, which oc- curred in the Rue de la,Boui-se. M. Mo- liere, a boot maker in that street, has had fortune “thrust upon him ” by acart knock- ing ainst his shop-window. Rather late at ni‘gIit a restive horse backed a cart against the iron shutters of the shop-front, with such force that apane of plate glass immediately behind the part struck was cracked into thousands of splinters. M. Molim-c’s first care was to secure the address ofthe owner of the horse and cart, and in the mornin be ’ was about to send for a glazier whose hi I he would have charged to the person responsi- blc tbt-the trespass u n his property ; but this window was crac ed in such a manner as no window ever was before, and M. Mo- liei-e observed that every passer, stopped to look at it, and exclaimed, “ How curious !” “How extraordinary!” During the whole day a crowd was collected in front of the house. It then occurred to M.Moliere that since his broken window oppearcd to possess such attractions for the public, it might an- swer his prupose to make the public pay for the gratification of their curiosity. Accord- ingly he ut up his outside shutter and charged one franc per head for udmision to his shop. Visitors flocked to the exhibition, and in a few hours the fame of it spread far and wide. Not asingle particle of the glass had fallen out, but the cracks radiating from the centre with wonderful regularity are so numerous that the pane presents the appear- ance of a gigantic cobweb. Seen om the interior of the shop by gas light it reflects the prismatic colours with extraordinary brilancy, and may be com ared to a pea- cock‘s tail. A speculator has offered the enormous sum of -I.000f. for the purchase of the fragile property, and the offer has been refused. A Question roa Ltwvsas.——The following which we extract from the Parts correspon- dence of the Republic, is decidedly French. It starts an interesting question for lawyers: “To whom does it broken pane of glass belong? If you can decide, under the cir- cumstances of the case I am going to relate, you will set a vexed question at rest. The other night a carriage badly guided dashed upon the sidewalk, and the pole passed thro’ the window pane of a ahoemaker’s shop. It went through as clean as a bullet, making a round 0 in the pane--and letting in a streak of cold air as smooth as a musket barrel.—If the pane had been cut up by cracks like the rays of the sun or the spokes of a wheel, it would have posesssd no earth- ly value, of course; but as it was, sundry amateurs of curiosities who passed by de- clsred it to be worth I0,000f. at least. The shoemaker thought he had made his ever- lasting fortune, and naturally enou h claim- ed the broken square. But he ha counted without his boat, or as I should say, without his proprietor. The owner of the house claimed the smashed window glass as his own by right of posession. The shoemaker y is tenant. It was in vain that the latter reminded his landlord that be had never ofi‘crsd before to re lace the window panes that he had the mis ortunc to break or to have broken. The landlord insisted, but he had not foreseen a certain ditliculty. The insurance company that had insured his house, not only against fire, but against tumbling to pieces, against earthquakes,, and, Igalnst window breakage, claimed in iti turn the right to mend the pane and take the old one. ut the insurance company laud fb otten a slight circumstance in their , way. he glazier claimed the broken pane as one of his itional, immemorial per- quisites; never, be said, had any one yet IIII-la any objection to his removing the splin- ters and tire old putty, and doing what he pleased with them.-oSo here nre tour claittt- ants, and I am not sure that the adroit dri- vsr will not at in his claim too, as the origi- trths breakage sad the lawsuits which threaten to grow out ofit."
