Who?’’ responded the wit- ness “TI asked you if you witnessed the difficulty in which Ike there was laid out?”’ ‘*There warn't no difficulty about it, coroner. Yer know I seed it all. Ike thar jest came projectin around careless like, with his tank full and the flaps of his holsters tucked back, a-loomin against the landscape bigger’n Mose Pearson's hog corral. He war that fond of himself that he couldn’t enjoy the peace and harmony that war prevailin from the Last Chance saloon to Nell Canty’s hurdy gardy without chippin into the game when he didn’t hold good cards. **‘He allowed he war goin to havea stag dance and have it then. A squad of recruits were at drill, and among them was an Irishman named Doherty, 6 feet 144 inches in height. The sergeant major at that time was what might be called rathera short man, being only 5 feet 4 inches. On this day he was seen approaching the squad, looking sharply about for some fault. All squared up with the excep- tion of Doherty, and the sergeant major made straight for him, when the follow- ing dialogue ensued: Sergeant Major—Heads up, man! (Doherty raised his head slightly.) Up higher, sir! (The head was raised again. ) Then the sergeant major, by standing on his tces, mapvaged to reach Doherty’s chin and poked it higher still, with the remark : **That’s better. Don’t let mo see your head down again, sir.’’ By this time all were interested at seeing Doherty staring far away above the sergeant major’s head, when pres- ently a voice from above said in a rich brogue: ‘“‘Sure and amItobe always loike this, sergeant major?’’ Sergeant Major—Yes, sir. Doherty—-Then I'll say goodby to ye, sergeant major, for begorra I'll niver see yez again. ’’—Nuggets. GODFREY, sident Board cf Trade, V anconver,B.C PRETTY NEW MATERIALS. Among the favorite materials for young women’s evening dresses this season are thin broche silks, in delicate colors, light, fancy crepons, china crape and india satins ard silks. Astrakhan is at present the favorite fur trimming. For ornamenting vestf and jackets it is put on in narrow band’ like a fold. A wider band is used for trimming the collar. Next to astrakhan is caracul. Some of the prettiest crepons and crapes are brocaded with tiny buds, dots and specks, and on white and deli- cately tinted grounds beavtiful brocad- ings are shown in turquoise blue, yel- low and light green. Shot taffeta is the favorite silk for making underskirts. For everyday skirts moreen and shot mohair are suit- able, giving excelient wear. Figured silks are much used for shirt waists and dressy bodices to be worn with dif- ferent skirts. For late winter and early spring wear it is said that checks and small fancy plaids are to be much used. The checks will be seen in silks, summer poplins, light twilled woolens, zephyr clotha, etamines and ginghams. Clan tartans will also be worn. Wool and ailk mixed goods are much in favor. In both dark and light colors these handsome materials may be seen, and their wearing qualities are superb. They usually come in double widths and have an exclusive appearance that will commend them. . Ava lining fur chinchilla is supplant- ing ermine. Nothing more exquisitely soft and luxurious can be imagined than this lining, and the handsomest and most expensive wraps for both street and opera wear now show the inside @ dainty mass of pale gray chinchilla. Brick red is seen in many fashionable gowns and wraps in Paris. Trimmed with black cloth strips or braid it is at once striking and effective and is said to be serviceable to the last. All shades of brown, tan and castor are also popu- lar in Paris.—New York Tribune.
