A World's Temperance Crusade. *“‘And now a word about your proposed trip around the world and I have done.” “To explain the objects of the proposed trip,” Mr. Pipe resumed, ‘‘I may say that during the last seven years the World’s Woman’s Christian Temperance Union has been preparing a monster polyglot petition against the traffic in alechol, opium, and legalized vice, to be presented to all the Governments of the world. Lady Henry Somerset and Miss Willard have been av- pointed as the deputation to convey this petition to the different Governments. The petition itself has now raached the unprecedented length ot over two million signatures, and with the attestation of cer- tain great societies, not less than three mil- lions. According to the forthcoming num- her of the Review of the C ‘hurches, Dr. Lunn has been requested by these ladies to organize a demonstration round the world. With this purpose in view a first-class steamer is to be immediately chartered and a party of one handred will be organized to accompany Lady Henry Somerset and Miss Willard in this remark- able crusade. Dr. Luann has arranged with me to act as managing secretary to this ex- pedition, and to accompany the party rou and the world.” ‘The crusade will commence at the an- nual convention of the World’s Women's Christian Temperance Union to be held in the United States next October The Am- erican delegation will then proceed to Washington, where the polyylot petition will bo presented to the Government. Leaving New York on October 24, the American contingent will join the British contingent in the great de- monstration at Exeter hall, on the Ist or 2ud of November. The crusaders’ steamer will leave London on Saturday, November 3rd, arriving at Naples on Monday, Nov- ember 12th. A visit will then be paid to Rome, where it is hoped that His Holiness the Pope and the King of Italy will each receive the delegation. The next capital to be visited will be Athens, where the Kiny of Greeve will be presented with the petition, Jerusalem will be the next point on the prcgramme, and the petition is to be presented to the Patriarch of Jerusalem, after which the Khedive will be visited at Cairo. It is intended to reach India in time for the National Congress, and a eix weeks’ tour will be made through India in a special train, visiting ali the principal towns of India and hoiding great meetings in each of them. From Calcutta the steamer will proceed to Ceylon and thence to Siam, with the object of presenting the petition tothe King of Siam. Eich Australian colony will then weleome the delegation, after which the course of the pilgrimage will be directed northward to China, where it is hoped that the Viceroy wili receive the delegation. Japan will also be visited, and the petition will be preseuted to the Mikado. After this the eastward cirenit of the world will be completed by a journey across the Pacific. It is intended at a later date to present the petition to the northern aud central Governments of Europe.” Advantages of Electricity. Electric lights, with thelr clear, clean and odorless illumination, electric bells and annunciators are by no means all the uses to which ingenuity had adapted elec- tricity for the household. There are houses in which every bedroom, closet, storeroom, etc., is lighted by a lamp which lights itself automatically whenever the door is opened and which shuts itself off whenever the door is closed from the out- side. Lights ina barn can be controlled from a house. There are electric lamps which at will can be operated either at fnll candle power or at much reduced power. Electric power is being used for operating elevators in residences. Other appliances of the power in residences are the operation of dumb-waiters, ventilating fans, ice-cream freezers, etc. The adapta- tion of electricity to heating is making rapid progress, but at present it can be us- ed more economically than coal only when itis geperated from water power. Thus far the heating of large spaces by electri- city is auexpensive luxury. Electric cook- iny is economical, and, of course, much preferred to any other method. All sorts of electric cooking uteasils are now in the market, ‘Lhese devices and arrangements are generally known, but thus far scarcely any residences have them all. Ina few yeurs, except as !o electric heating appara- tna, they will be generaliy introduced when builiings are constructed, They will make domestic labor lighter and more pleasant, and will do away with, even in isvlated and rural quarters, mmuci dradgery that now fal: 6 upon the honsewi fe. baintiaatiint Attac aed by a ees. A striking example of the instinct of ma- ternal devotion in the animal kingdom, and at the same time a curivus incident, Was witnessed by scores of people at Wis- sahickon statiou recently, says the Phila- delphia Record. A sleek looking cow, with a happy-go-lucky calf at her side, wandered upon the railroad tracks just as a train pulled up at the depot. The cow got across the track ahead of the engine, but her offspring, with the recklessness of youth and curiosity of inexperience, linger- ed to dispute the path. The engineer crowded air on his brakes, bat the calf disappeared beveath the cowcatcher, Every body locked for veal eutlets; but as locomotive slowed up and stopped the calf calmly stood up under the borfér between the driving wheels. The cow heard the bleat of alarm and caught sight of her calf, She uuhesitagingly attacked the big iron horse and vainly endeavored to horn it off the tra: i, bawling angrily the while. A newsboy, afier a deal of manoeuvering, managed to push the calf between the driving-wheels, and cow and calf moved leisurely off as though nothing had hap- pened. Japan's Telephone System. The use of the telephone is becoming more and more general in that go-ahead country. Japan, At the end of 1893 there were 1576 subscribers to the exchange at Tokio; 351 in Yokohoma; 300 in Osaka, and 162 in Kobe. This gives a total of 2389 subscribers, as against only 1167 at the end of 1892. The number, therefore, more than doubled itself during the year. —Elecirical Review. When Mollie bathes the baby I lay my book aside And watch the operation With deep paterna! pride; I scan the dimpled body Of the struggling Jittle elf, For undeveloped points of Resemblance to myself. When Mollie bathes the baby She always says to me: “Isn’t he just as cunning And sweet as he can be ? Just see those pretty dimples ! Aren’t his eyes a lovely blue ?” And then, “You precious darling, I could bite those arms in twe.” WHEN When Mollie bathes the baby I always say to her: “Look out now, don’t you drop him,” And she answera back, “No, sir !” Then I talk about his rosy cheeks, The muscles in his arms, His shapely head, his sturdy lege, And other manly charms. When Mollie baths the baby The household bends its knee, And shows him greater deference That it ever shows to me. But I feel no jealous goading, As they laud him to the skies, For every one assures me That he has his father’s eyes. —Thomas Bewsy Holmes in June Ladies’ Home Journal. BETWEEN FATHER AND &80O¥, We havea great deal to say im our literature about the confidence that should exist between a mother and her daughter, but we ignore altogether too much the frankness that should exist between a father and his son, writes Edward W. Bok in “At Home with the Editor” ia the June Ladies’ Home Journal. It is not right to expect that our girls shall bear the whole burden of moral responsibility. Our boys must be tanght that the world expects uprightness in a man just as much as it looks for it ina woman. If the men of to-day are protected by an un- fair moral discrimination, that is no reason why the men of to-morrow should be so sheltered. If it is for women to elevate their conception of the moral standard for men, it is for the young men of to-day to adjust themselves to that higher measurement. A healthy frankness between the boys of to-day and their fathers is the first step. This ie man’s part in the aim for social purity. Women must cease their blinking at actions in men which they will not tolerate in wo- men; men, to whom experience has come, must unfold to the younger mea. It is a favor to a boy that his feelings shall be analyzed for him by his father; that hele taught that his self-control, or his Joss of of it, means an ascent or wa descent in the social scale. There is no harm ina father pointing out these things to his son ; the harm comes when the father neglects to do ro. A young man should never be ex pected in any point of morality to experi- ence what his father can explain and warn hima against. —_————_- oe se- Political scandals in America pale be fore one brought to light in Italy throngh the failure cf the Banco Romano. This bank was the most important money in- stitution in the kingdom, and its money government to serve their own ends, the result being financial disaster, ruin to many persons, prosecution of the bank managers and ex- posures of some of the most prominent public men of the country. The trial of the ex-governor of the bank is now pro- ceeding, the charge made against him being that he issued sixty million lire (about $12,000,000) in notes above the original limit, and that he stole twenty-eight million of the ameunt over-issued. The official on trial, when testifying in his own defence, declared that the bank has been insolvent since 1888, but the Finance Minister prevented him from declaring it so in order not to upset the finances of the country. The ministers had also compelled him to assist in booming Italian government bonds to 101, and this transaction eost the hank $3,500,000. A good deal more was spent in operating the bvom, in announcements and other things necessary for it, and for elections to support govern- ment candidates. It was shown, too, that the Premier had been questioned in Parlia- ment about the condition of th+ bank, an“ although he knew the irregularities exieted he denied all knowledge of them.
