The reasons given for this increased power are first, that t brain mind has more force at its dis posal while the other parts of the bods are at rest, ing in the mind is not and second, that while work condition in question, the distracted by anything ex ternal and can concentrate all its force: on its work. Worrying say> which th. any over a thing prevents the mind from working steadily and evenly." A New Drink Cure, A new specific for drink craving has been tried at Bellevue Hospital, New York, with results that are said to hav filled the hospital officials with astonish ment. Five confirmed drunkards were experimented upon. heurs they had lost and in four days th Within twenty four the taste for liquor, ir eyes were brighter, their step had Jost its listlessmess and their mervousness was gone. Several cases of delirium tremens have yielded to the treatment in an equally startling manner. A remarkable thing about the new cure is the quickness with which it works. The men who are admitted one day will be walking around the next The desire for drink is destroyed in from six to twenty-four hours, and ail the aleohol is driven out of the system in from three to five days. The specific is given by the spoonful. Its effect is to cause the patient to be as indifferent to alcohol as before he ever tasted it. If he continues to leave it alone he will never have any desire for it again. Of course, he may begin drinking again. and thus reacquire the habit; but he can be cured a second time as easily as before. The morphine habit is equally amenable to the cure, though 1t takes a little longer than alcoholism. ‘The cocaine habit can be cured in thirty-six hours. Dr. Oppen- heimer, who discovered the specific, had some amusing experiences in coming the skepticism of some of his pa- tients, About a year ago two friends of his wound up a dicussion on the merits of the discovery by making a_ bet that one of them could take three doses of the medicine on each of two successive days and then take a drink of whiskey. Dr. Oppenheimer said he cculdn’t, and the other friend backed his judgment. After taking the medicine the patient went to a saloon and @rdered whiskey. On sipping it he declared thet it had been doctored, and exclaiming that it was ‘‘worse than cod liver oll,”’ refused to try it again. It was two months be fore he could take even a little claret with his dinner, and he spent a good part of the intervening time in abusing Dr. Oppenheimer and his specific. has over- Novel Feature tu Telephone Work. While the fact that the roar of Niagara Falls has recently been heard in New York over the telephone is generally known, but little has been said of the novel manner in which the transmitter was brought within range of the noise of the falling water. After investigation, it was decided that the Cave cf the Winds would be the best place at which to agther the sound, as there the falis can he approached more closely than at al any other place. On a rocky ledge in the caye, right under the center fall, was placed a wooden box, in which was secured a telephone, with a ‘solid back’’ transmitter. To this was attached a sheet- iron funnel, 20 inches long and about 14 most inches in diameter at the outer end Three batteries were placed in the box, but only two were used The box was wrapped in canvas to protect the appar atus from the constantly falling spray. When the sound was first listened to at the New York end, the conveyed was that of the hissing of a gigantic sheet of spray, and hardly a suggestion of the ‘‘thunder’”’ of the falls was audible. This was subsequently rem edied by moving the box in the cave. to the point where it was produced by the falling tous of water. One, a sharp his ing sound, like escaping steam, is made by the water as it curls over the rock be low and goes sweeping outinto the river. The other is the deep pounding roar made by the striking of the mighty col umn on the rocks or water below. By impression it moving the telephone 12 or 15 feet fur ther back, the roar was caught and the hissing proportionately reduced. The re- sult was that an average pote was heard at the other end of the 462-miie line, although it was as curious as interesting to observe how from time to time it uld be dominated alternately by the deeper diapascn of the impact of the falls, or the sibilant hurtling of the spray. Tickle Your Ear. There is a branch of the pneumo-gas tric, or respiration-digestion, nerve sup- and it has that stimu- vessels of plied to the passage of the ear, been proved by expi lation of this nerve causes the the digestive organs to dilate. Tickling the } the stimulates this nerve, blood is withdrawn from the skin to fill the dilated blood-vessels of the digestive organs, this causes a feeling of riment issuge of ear chilliness to the surface of the body, and shivering is the result. The explana- tion of the pnenmo-gastric nerve being supplied to the passa of the ear, is in- teresting. All \ ates in an early stage of their development have certain clefts in the head agalled ‘bronchial clefts,’’ which, in the lower furms be- come the gill passages, and being, therefore, parts of the respiration-diges- tion system, are ne by the yume gastric nerve. But the first cleft develops into our ear-passage oan eustachian tube and so we get the anomaly of parts of a special sense being supplied with branches | of a nerve of respiratl on and digestion. Epmunp Yeicu, 264 Sherbourne Street Toronto, Gloom Of ill health, ondency and despair, gives way to the sunshine of hope, happigess and health, upon taking Ifood’s Sarsaparilla, because it gives renewed life aad vitality to the blood, and through that imparts nerve stren gth, vigor and energy to the whole body. Read this letter: *Hood’s Sar helped me changed sickness to health saparilla wonderfully, gloom to sun- shine. No pen can describe what I suf- fered. I was deathly sick, had sick head- aches every few days and those terrible tired, despondent feelings, with heart troubles so that I could not go up and Sunshine down over stairs without clasping my hand my heart and resting. In fact, it would almost take my breath away. I suf- fered so I did not care to live, yet I had much to live for. There is no pleasure in life if deprived of health, for life becomes a burden. Hood’s Sarsaparilla does far more than advertised. After taking one bottle, it is sufficient to recommend itself.” Mrs. J. E. Smiru, Beloit, lowa. Hoods Sarsaparilla Is the One True Blood Purifier.
