Dr-c 20 A correspondent thus writes The Guardian: First let me mention an excellent concert. given last. Thursday night. by the teaeltcrs and pupils of Fanning school, assisted by a few others. The program was a decided success from start to finish. \Vhen every number was so good, it. would be invidlous to make distinctions. The pupils *did splendldly, and show- ed the very careful drilling which they have received from their teachers In these directions, as they reveal every day ln their home work and studies the diligence of the teachers along the more serious lines. Miss Tanton of St. Eleanorsdesrrvcs spcclal thanks for hor well rendered solo. and the graceful way ln which she responded to an insistent encore. The program so captivated the large audience that after the National Anthem, they rose en masse. and gave three rousing cheers for the teachers, the Misses Clark and Stewart. Net proceeds were $49.00. Nor should we omit, as"one of the lm- portant items, to mention decided lm prove-ments in the hall made quickly and very cheerfully by the trustees on the suggestion of those interested in the success of the concert. The funeral ol the late Mrs. Wm. Sinclair, Hamilton, on Christmas day was attepded by a large concourse of people. Several members of the family Mrs. McMlll|un, Mrs. Jones and Miss Eliza crossed to the mainland to their respec- tive homes on Tuesday the 26th. Christmas night brought a very pleas- ant surprise to the inmates of the manso. Five members of the congregation, Geo. H. McNutt, Walter Owen, W. H. Crozier. Henry Crozier and P. W. Crozier, walked ln suddenly bearing two large parcels, and immetlintely proceeded with their c-.rrnnd's object.. George B. Mc- Nutt, ina vcry graceful way, informed Mr. Rattee that in the name of the whole congregation, they had como to present him with a fur coat. Whercupon other members of the committee displayed two beauties from which to choose. Mr. ltattce felt so taken aback by these proceedings that he hardly knew what to say, but after very heartily thanking the committee and all the comzregation for their most generous kindness, proceeded with the aid of the committee to make a selection. His choice finally rested upon the splendid Raccoon the other beings beautiful fur lined coat with Persian lamb collar. PAINS For Society folk. OUR TELEPHQNE 'MONOPOLYa?'_ ‘ ~ , Stu:-Dr. Dewafslettor in your issue of the lilth lust ouour telephone system md your- commentei on' same were ap- propriate and timely. No doubt our re- presentatives will respond to your kind Invitation and give their views on this important suhieot lu The Guardian. Our Province is one of the most thickly settled parts of the Dominion, and yet such a thing as a rural telephone is not to be found in the land. All through the rural districts ot the United States and parts of Out. the ooifntry roads are strung with a net: work of wires leading to the farmers' homes which are supplied with telephones. This was brought about by the residents of certain rural districts uniting and putting in their own system of telephones. The companies, not havirg monopolies could not prevent, and the rural lines were so successful that tho old companies were soon compelled to grant connections or go out of business. Now the telephone companies are gladly erecting the necessary lines and- giving the inhabitants of other districts a satis- factory rural service at fair rates. Unless we are to laiz behind in the pro gressive march of the times, we must either be supplied with rural lines at figures within our means or be permitted to install our own system with the necessary connection to main system. Rural districts in the United States have _tho moils delivered at thc gat-cs cvcry morning, and the telephone in the homes at a nominal figure, thus bringing the lonely country home in touch with the world. Compare this with our semi- weekly mall delivered at a distant P. 0. and no telephone for miles. The system of telephones now ln use here in the country is of little or no use. The deliv- ery ofa message after lt. has been received at an oillce is so expensive and uncertain that tho phone is seldom used. We have a telegraph monopoly saddled on the Island for the remainder of 99 years, which effectually prevents wlre‘ less cotntttunluation ` with t-he main- land although we are isolated for months out in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. \Ve have stood the telephone monoply for20 years, patiently waiting for the end, and now Mr Editor, I hope you will kindly assist in letting it die a natural death and give us o. rest from monopoly, for not till then will we have an eillclent service in town or country. The Manitoba Government is the first to declare for Government ownership of the telephone seI~vice. If our Govern- ment cannot see way clear to do like- wise. it can at least desist from throwimz impediments in the way of improve- ment by refusing to grant a further monopoly in any shape to our Telephone Co. Yours truly, F. Bovvnn. -Bunbury, Lot 48. Dec. 22nd, 1905. AN AMERICAN DISEASE Indigestlon is Responsible for More Sickness in America Tnan Any Other Disease.
