They forced the door open and arrested the proprietress: Mrs. Sarah Lowther, ; Jessie Susanna Murphy—a girl of 17 year’s of age— and three young men. The women appeared at the Stipencdiary Magistrat’s Court this fore- noon. Mrs. Lowther was lame from the ef- fects of rheumatic fever. In the court she had a baby, apparently about nine mauths old, in her arms, ‘hey—Murphy and Lowther— were each sentenced to six months’ hard labor for keeping a brothel. Antonie Snay, cook of the schooner ‘‘Win- tield Scott,” was, yesterday, arrested on a warrant for having stabbed, under the right eye, with a sharp point of a broom handle, a fellow-seaman of his, named Angus B. Mc- Donald. It appears that, on Friday at noon, MeDonald went to the forecastle of the vessel and instructed the cook to fry some beefsteak for dinner. ‘ray refused, saying *‘it is Fri- day, you (McDonald) are a Catholic, and if I fry beef you will not eat it.” McDonald said : ‘*it was the mate’s orders, and if he would uot fry the meat, the mate would log him.” An altercation followed. Sray lifted an axe and threw it at McDonald, threatening, at the same time,to cut him in two. The axe struck the upper part of the forecastle; and Sray at tempted to gain the deck with the apparent object of carry ingouthisthreat. But McDonald stood at the door and kept him back by wicked attempts to kick. Sray seized a broom and fought his way to the top of the stairs, when he stabbed his opponent under the left eye with the sharp js ae the broom -handle, and then retreated: He was helped in his retreat by McDonald who dea!t him a violent kick in the face. Sray rema‘n2d in the forecastle, and when others of the crew arrived < Donald made complaint and had him arrested. The Magistrate to-day heard the statements of both, and seeing that they equally to blame, he dismissed the case with costs. ' } i ONDON JULY. NOW SHOWING ! A Lot of Mens’ Whita Vests, AT 50 CTS.
