Retios.—Divers have been at work for several days past in Bedford Basin, Halifax, sending up cannon balls evidently from the ships burnt previous to the hasty departure of Dake D’ Auvill’s fleet in 1746. Mr, Stewart caught up a damping cloth, and with the assistance of two or three of his workmen, got the flames under control. _ > Persory.—A Sydney, C. B., despatch of the Sth inst., says: John McRury, of Cow Bay, was to-day committed for trial to the Supreme Court on a charge of perjury. The prosecution resulted from McRury being an informer in a Scott Act case. Mr. Fraser takes the Vice-Principalship, held last year by Miss McLeod..—Agriculturist. anita Forest Fires.—Advices from St. John’s report that destructive forest fires are prevailing along the shores of Conception Bay. At Oovllier's nine houses have been destroyed. At Placentia the dwelling of the railway officials was burned. At Harbor Grace Junction seven houses were consumed. At littie Bay North twenty-six families have been burned out. Nothing was saved by them. A woman and two children were burned to death at Kings Cove. Hauirax, June 10. _ Fishermen along the Eastern shore are intensely excited over the outrageous van- dalism of Yankee ocean highwaymen. For the past week a fleet of pirates has been seining in and off Chebucto and St* Peter's Bay. Fish have been very plenty inshore, and to get at them the Yankees have deliberately destroyed the nets, gear, ete., of the Canadian fishermen, and stolen the fish in the nets. ‘The damage to property is placed at $1,200. It is estimated that the Yankee fleet captured 1,000 barrels of mackerel. The nets, ete., of Robert Wilson were destroyed by the S3Gloucester schooner Alice C. Gordon, The steam cruiser Acadia sailed from Halifax this morning in charge of Captain Lorway. The New Governor-General. Orrawa, June 9. Yesterday while Mr. Robert English, one vf the wealthiest and most prominent farm- ers of Burnt River, and his son Alfred, aged 15, were placing traps for woodchucks, the son moved along the river bank, un- known to his father. The father seeing his brown hat beside the bushes, and mis- taking it for a woodchuck, fired, itstantly killing the young fellow. The father is prostrated with grief. George Shepherdson, a farm laborer, and Mrs. Pareege, a widaw, were commit- ted for trial at Erin, on Friday, ona charge of murdering the latter’s illegitimate infant on May 26th, the male prisoner, in his evidence, stating that he deliberately drowned the child at its mother’s request.
