Special Service Court adjourned to Thursday. largely Allended ..'A very large attendance was in evidence for a special service yesterday afternoon at the Mont- ague United Baptist Church when the speaker was Rev. Roy D. Campbell, radio evangelist of "The Light of Life Hour", and director of Moncton Youth for Christ. The service was conducted by the pastor. Lic. Bruce Moore and the choir rendered a special num- ber. as did the mixed quartetie. Speaking on the message of the lllld-C8nilJl')'. evangelist Camp- bell recounted the advance of science. industigv, curliure. and the many nihcr products of man's ingv.-nuitv. but decried the fact that that was all ihe progress. The world of men had found that little had accriicd Ill the benefit of hiinizinity. but rather a paralyzing fear had swept the earth. The reason for it was seen in the fact that. despite ihe ad- vanccs. man had not changed. The liunian heart in sin was the basis of all the chaos. A strong appeal to accept Christ was made on the ground that He alone can give forgiveness of sin. and that in IIlnl we find the redemption we nerd for time and clernit,v. Relax and enjoy yourself on the banks of Souris Harbour. Enjoy a delicious lobster supper served ri ht at the water's edge, "an end the day by attending the dance in the new St. Ma Hall. Excellent too: and excellent music. '5 Parish ' THE GUARDIAN. CHARLOTTETOWN 4, Island Odds And Ends Souris becomu the centre of Island interest this week with its big regatta on Wednesday. The word. regatta does not convey the full scope of the programme plan- ned. because there will be just as much entertainment on land as on the broad sweep of Sourisl fine harbour. But top billing is being given to the boat-races for fisher- men. and for the very good reason that the town is the business cen- tre for most of the fishermen in Eastern King's County. Ashore. the management of the show will serve the best lobster supper to be had in the Province at a. reasonable price. and there will be games and music to hold the interest after the racing cvents are over. The Souris Regalia had its birth last summer. and its renew- al this week-according to the committee in charge-will be bet- ter arranged and handlcd than in 1950. The whole town and many fishermen in the county are lend- ing a hand to make Wednesday. the 11th of July. one of ihe year's best out-door shows, of such appeal as to become recognized as a major summer attraction. The location is superb. thc enthusiasm of King's County people commend- able. and if the weather holds K003. Sollris dcserves to have more visitors than it has had in years. 0 I C it is aiicgccl with some indig- nation by many Island sportsmen that two of our best trout. streams are being ruincd by refuse from starch factories. "l'hci'e sccms lit- tle doubt that ti'ou'.. arc dyiiig iii the streaiiis at North Lake and at New Glasgow and that it is only a matter of time before both will bc as free of trout as Government Pond in Charlottetown. It is argued by some people that any interference with the manufacture of starch would be a blow to our potato growers, but the grower is not party to the destruction of the (trout rtreams now under dis- cuss on. The farmer sells yiis potatoes and that is the end of ihe slory as far as he is concerned. He cannot stipulate as 3 condition or sale that his potatoes must not be the indirect agent in ihe pollution of fishing streams. Tho remedial action urged by many people is that factories install disposal facil- ities to prevent. injurious sub- stances entering the trout sireams involved. or that the factories op- erate from sites from which refuse can be expelled to the open sea. Our game laws provide penalties for netting. jigging. set-line fish- ing. and other unsportsmanlike practises. and for dynamiiing one dcep hole in a trout stream. maiii- land parties paid more than a hundred dollars in lines a year or two ago. There are many mllcs of fz.-hing at North Lake and New Glasgow. and dozens of holes and hidenuts in which the trout are being kill- ed with the thoroughness and sureness that no dynamiiers could equal. The question arises: would it be legal to fine a man who strung a net across the salmon hole at North Lake since the trout he might catch are probably doomed anyway? Or, how much i are you going to fine the indiv- idual who fishes his dinner ' through the ice of some mill pond I out of season. when trout arc- being destroyed wholesale in and: out of season. while the law looks l the other way. l Our trout streams i are a great tourist. asset, and the prized play-grounds of II10ll53flfIR! of Islanders. Thel immediate approach to the towiil has not yet been prepared for sur- I facing but it is staked out. andi apparently will receive some at-1 tention very ioon. . 0 While the sirawbrii-ry raiiningl 'riniiglilcr of Mrs. Frtiiiccs Rooney, L season is in full swing Eastern Packers at Souris expect to em- ploy ninety people. mostly wo- men. This is of considerable help during a time of year otherwise dull in this fishing community. O U 0 . of cords of wood- pulp are awaiting shipment at Souris and Georgetown. In both towns. the wood is piled high at collection points not far from the ivatcrfronis. Other types of lumbering are also giving consid- erablc work. At Souris a new mill operated by Dock:-ndoisff Bros. is in continuous operation, and the partners plan to man- ufacture sashes and doors, at a later date. A second new mill at Souris which is giving steady em- ployment to a half dozen men is owned by Alden MacLcod. Both mills report the demand for lum- bcr of all kinds zis.being heavy.
