- om a Capt. Boyton’s Parrct Captain Paul Boyton owns a talking par rot, which has a habit of imitating crying babies. On Friday the Captain was bring ing the bird in a basket to New York from his home at Flushing. Suddenly the pas sengers in the ladies’ cab in on the aan) boat heard the wailing of an infant pri ceed from the basket at the Captain’s side As the s. und increased the passe ingens otared at Boyton, who got in the face, gave the basket a gentle kick. lady became indignant, and said something red and about ‘‘a big brute.” The kick seemed to have aroused Polly's feelings, for _the screaming grew louder. The staring of the passengers became unbearable, and the Captain seized the basket and hurried to the front of the boat in evident e »mbarrass ment, for he is not a married man. He was followed by all the passengers, who | watched him n: arrowly as he stood by the railing. When the boat landed at the foot of Thirty-fourth street, and Boyton reached the street, he was accosted by a policeman “Captain,” said the officer, old gent says youve got @ basket.’ **What nonsense’ gathered; and suppose I have ‘Well, it’s a curious way to carry a child and you'll excuse me if lL insist on seeing it. It’s my duty, you know.” ‘All right,” said the Captain, as he cut the cover of the basket open with a pen- ‘‘there’s an baby in ‘said Boyton, asa crowd 7 knife. The parrot stuck its head out of the basket, and yelled, ‘‘ Polly wants a cracker |” And now the policeman would like te meet the ‘old gent’ who gave him the in- formation which led to the laughter which follewed.—N. Y. Herald. oa. Literary and Dramatic. “The popularity of Shakespeare's plays with German audiences is shown by some statistics published in the year book of the German Shakespeare Scciety, by which it appears that, taking the whole of the German companies, in two years and a ha'f fending December 31, 1882, there were given in Germany 1,854 performances of Shakespeare s plays. The much praised coolness of Manager Abbey in standing with cigar in mouth gaz- ing at the destruction of his own theatre by fire recalls the story of Sheridan, who, when his theatre was burning, went into a bar-room near by and, © dering a glass of wine, sat down by the window and watch- ed the conflagration, Upon being rallied for this, he answered:—‘‘Is it anything strange thata man would sit drinking by his own fire /’ While Mrs. Siddons was playing one night an obstinate man in the crowded pit insisted upon standing up. A disturbance took place, which threatened to become a row. It was, however, arrested by the witty Henry Erskine. Coming to the front of his box, he quietly said, yet so as to be heard by all: ‘‘Pray, excuse the gentlemen; don’t you see it is only a tailor resting himself!’ The effect was magical. A burst of laughter put everyone in good humor, and the obstinate man took his seat. —_— i 2 —_ (The Great French Remedy, LeDuc’s Periodical Pills.
