Western Rura!. ae ZO ” Fish Lines ox Miles Long. BACH WITH 20,000 HOOKS, BAITED TO LURE THE STURGEON. They fish with lines six miles long ip W innebago Lake, Wisconsin, and use 20,000 hooks on every line,” said a New York fisherman who has been there,” “‘and if they don’t haul up 2,000 fish every time they call it indillferent luck. And every fish will weigh from twenty toseventy pounds. That's the way they fish for sturgeon out there.” “One of theselines will reach half way across the lake. Itia a rope ap inch in diameter. It is carried out in the lake, large buoys attached to it at intervals to keep it on the surface. The 20,000 hooks, baited with pieces of meat or fisb, are lowered to the bottom of the lake by “snoods” of the proper length, attached to the line. It takes twenty boats, with two menin each, to look after this big fish line. Each boat has 1,000 hooks in its charge. The books are placed eighteen inches apart, and to bait all the hooks once requires not less than 1,000 pounds of meat. It takes the forty men and twenty boats ten hours to set the line for the first time. After that the fishermen are constantly employed in going to and fro over the line, hauling in the sturgeon that have been caught on the hooks, and rebaiting where it is necessary. ‘To haul in a seventy-pound sturgeon from the bottom of the lake is an excit- ing piece of work, but requires more strength than skill, as the fish always has the hook several inches down his throat, having sucked bait and all down without any regard to consequences. There is no danger of losing the fish un- Joss the snood of the hook breaks. When the fish is hauled to the suriace a gaff, like a meat hook, is thrust into the side of its head, and the sturgeon is drawn into the boat and knocked on the head with a mallet. The hook is cut out of its throat, rebaited. and thrown back into the lake. ‘The averaye catch of sturgeons is one to every ten hooks. loaded with all it will carry of sturgeon, the fishermen row back to the shore, where others take the fish and dispose of them. The fisherman knows the particular section of the line on which they work by the arrangement- of the buoys. These are placed ten feet apart and every 150th one is red. The space between the red buoys contain 1,000 hooks. The sections are numbered, aod each boat has its number corres- ponding with the section it fishes. While the average catch is one sturgeon to ten hooks, it is nO uncommon thing | . for the fishermen to find but one or two on an entire section of 1,000 hooks. “The Lake Winnebago sturgeon is highly prized among the lumbermen aud others in the region. Its flesh is finer, and of better flavor than the salt water sturgeon'’s. The fish seils at six cents a pound at retail. Large quanii- ties are salted and smoked, for use in the lumber wv compe. A very simple way to make these for small children, from one anda halt to five When a boat is} years, is to lay three broad pleats, sew them, and spread them out, then lay the pattern on for the back of the dress; a sack pattern or a plein apron pattern will do for this. Cut itout and after securing the pleats firmly down as far as the bottom of the waist, rip out the stitches holding them below that, and let them fall loosely, in order to lave the neeessary fullness to the skirt. The fronts may be plaited or may be per tectly ] lain with the exception of a strip dawn the front, upon which the buttons are sewed.
