THB fame of Chaplain Lane as a lecturer was sufficient to fill the main audience room of the First Methodist Church to the doors last eveninir tolisten to his personal reminiscences of the war in South Africa. The great audience were amply repaid as for two hours and a half he held their closest attention. Chaplain Lane had gone out with the Second Contingent and his story had to do with experiences gathered mainly iii the long march between Cape Town and Pretoria. He talked in strong voice, with inuch energy of utterance and detailed scenes of varied nterest, some tragic in the extreme, thers pathetic, and occasionally enliven- ng his story with laughable escapades nd touches of rare. humor. He had been himself more than once under fire and had suffered not only the hardships of the weary march, the night bivouac in the rain. the short rations and other privations, but, had been entrapped in an ambush.had been sniped at by Boer marks- men, and had his ear-drums blown in by a shell exploding at close quarters, n frggm ent of which pierced his hat. Very graphic and interesting it all was to the eager listeners, and served to izive a most clear-cut and realistic impression of what war is like with its “moving accidents by flood and Held." A due peroratlon closed amid great applause a splendid lecture. A map of the large field of war operations, and diagrams of several battlefields, to- gether with arms, :dag and relics from the war aided in the exposition. Mayor Warburton presided and introduced the lecturer. The flue choir of the church under direction of Prof. Watts furnished music at the opening and led God Save the King at the close. ._.__4_-- p,...Q-» How ARE YOUR ivaavss 2 If they are weak and you _feel nervous and easilv "tlustratcd’ can t Sleep. and rise in the morning unrefreshed, your blood is poor.
