OTTAWA, Sept. 9 - (OP) - A small. block "G" at the nape of the King's neck soon will ap- pear on some postage-stamps -- proof that they have been bought and paid for by the government. The "6" stands for Govern- ment and a Post-Office Depart- ment officlal said today it will replace the letter 0.H M.S.. mean- ing "On His Majesty's Srvicei. which for the last year have been overprinted on Government - pur- chased stamps. below the King's portrait. Just as some big firms have post-office permission to perforate business stamps, overprlnting is the Government's way to saying "hands-off" to employees who might be tempted to use the stamps on personal mail. The "G" stamp has been creat- ed because 0.1-LMS. was found "misleading." The letters. which appear on mail going under the Government franklng system. have come to be regarded as meaning "free" mail. The "G" will be prlnled at the nape of the King's neck "because we don't want to deface his por- trait." an official said. The Department won't be so particular about stamps on which the King's portrait does not ap- pear. On these stamps the "G" will be dead in the centre. The Department believes that the new stamps are going to be popular with Canadian rhilatellsis. It isn't going to be. easy for col- lectors to locate the first cancell- ed numbers. There's no specific day of issue. "G" stamps will be sold to departments just as soon as the regular supply of "O.i'-I.M.S." types is exhausted. A quantity of the latter has been set aside by the Post-Office Department's philatellc section for purchase at face value. Philatelic orders for "G" stamps also will be accepted. .Bofh types will be sold only A cmmr. FISH CULTURE orc- VELOPMENT. up to assoc. Otta- wa. AN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER. 54,740-35,340, Ottawa.
