Morton, the army flood commander who has direct- ed Red River control measures since last week-end. let the good news arouse over-optimism in the ihreatened cities of 350.000 total population. "Weather and optimism are the two most dangerous elements in the picture right now," said the Deputy Minister. "Given good weather we dis- count the possibility oi any sudden rise. "Sudden storms or prolonged rain and we're in for serious trouble." Brig. Morton's warning was even more emphatic. All Out Effort He called for an "absolutely full effort" to strengthen the cities' river defences. Heavy rainfall dur- ing the next it) days might bring a tremendous increase in the river level. so might a sudden increase in the run-off oi Red tributaries. Last Tuesday Brig. Morton asked avery "non-combantant" in the flood fighting - women, children. invalid: and old folks C to leave the danger area at once. Between 70.000 and 75,080, by unofficial es- timates. had left by Sunday night. some 13,000 quit the twin cities Saturday, said flood-control head- quarters, a drop oi more than 1,800 from the figure for the day before. The pace oi voluntary evacua- tion has not been fast enough. Brig. Morton said. He repeated earlier warnings that plans have been prepared for general evacuation of the city it the river took a jump. He infer- red strongly that there still is plenty of danger the plans may he needed. Premier Douglas L. Campbell also stressed the need for more winni- peggers to evacuate of their free will to out the risk if general ev- acuation under military direction is required. Dr. W.H. Soper stated that alcohol is a drug and a poison. l-le told.of the partial loss of self control and will power caused from its use. and quoted "Wine does not help us to do a thing well. but makes us less ashamed to do it badly”. Dr. Soper compared alcohol under control to a fire which gives ivamith and comfort. and alcohol out of control to a raging forest fire. Dealing with the A.A.'s policy of no time limit pledges. the Rev. H.E.D. Ashford quoted. "As thy days. so shalt thy strength be". He gave three rules which he said could be well applied to A. A.'s, as follows: (1) Never be afraid of people. (2) Never collect inanim- ate objects. or they will collect you. (3) Always laugh at yourself first. Mr, Ashford also stated that his work is made much easier be- cause of the A. A., and that drink- ing does not drown sorrow. it only lrrigates it. The women's angle toward alco- holism was also dealt with very fully in a talk which asked the ladies in the audience to practice tolerance. Although it is so easy to become impatient. wives and moth- ers of alcoholics tan only attain trannuility of spirit by the practice of tolerance. Miracles do not hap- pen every day. and the miracle .1! an alcohollc'a starting the A.A. program should be sufficient. The speaker llso expressed the thought that it is better to make the mis- take of attributing good intentions to everyone, than to make one mistake of misjudging is fellow man. The Anniversary cake was cut by the oldest member and the youngest member of the club. Re- freshments were served. and the meeting brought to a close with a hearty sing song.
