H., May 8&.—Nine years ago the wife of John Murphy, then a young girl, was assaulted by her step- father. The man was not prosecuted, upon his promise to remain out of the state for 12 years. Last night he suddenly appear- ed at a window near which Mrs. Murpliy was sittingand held up a large card on which was written: ‘*I have located you, and have returned for revenge.” Mrs. Murphy fainted, and when she recovered, atew minutes later, her hair had turned from brown to gray. The cause of her | fright disappeared ss mysteriously as he had appeared, WITH A PIN IN HER THROAT, SALTIMORE, Md., May 8. Annie Glass- ner, a school-girl in her ninth year, lies at her home at the point of death with a pin in her throat. She swallowed it about ten days ago. A neighboring physician tried to relieve her, but was unable to find the pin, and she was taken home. Blood con- tinues tu flow from the wound, and the pain Was su intense that after being plaesd in bed she weut into convulsions. Two surgeons were called in, but they have been unabie to extract the pin or even locate it. The girl cannot eat or sleep, and suifers excruciating pain. She is gradually wasting away, The pin is be- lieved to be imbedded far down in the Jeft side. UNIVERSAL POSTAGE RATE. Lonpon, May 8.—A deputation called to-day upon the Right Hon. Geo. J. Gos- chen, Chancellor of the Exchequer, for the purpose of laying before him the argu- ments in favor of the establishment of a uviversa] rate of penny postage to all parts of the British empire. Mr. Goschen replied that it would be impossible to lower the postal rates. The government, he said, already lost £27,866 in four months by the reduction in colonial postage. A RUSTY NAIL AND DEATH. Sr. CatHertnes, May &8&.—Maria Con- nolly, a former resident of this city, but who has lately been living with relatives near Reynoldsville, died yesterday morning of lock jaw after intense suffering at the age of sixty years. About a week ago Mrs. Connolly while out in the yard, stepped on arusty nail, which penetrated her foot. Nothing was thought of the matter until the feet began to swell, when medical aid was useless, A LITTLE GIRL FRIGHTENED TO DEATH, Marion, Ala., May 8.—Edith Brown, a beautiful girl of seven years, was frightened to death a few days ago by a St. Bernard dog. She was passing along the rtreet, and the dog ran viciously to the fence and bounded against it, climbing up on the pailings. The child screamed and fell to the ground. Passers-by came to her assist- ance, but when they reached her she was gasping, and in a few moments was dead. CARPENTERS’ STRIKE OFF. Brocgrton, Mass., May 8.--The carpen- ters’ strike in this city seems to have col- lapsed. Although no adjustment has been arrived at between the union and the em- ployes, it is quite freely reported that the strike is off, and the men are returning to work at the old wages. A TRAIN CARRIED AWAY. Rome, May 8.—A quarry train carrying many workmen was carried away by a sud- den flood at Allerona, province of Umbria, to-day.
