Shakespeare was o ne of the eatest students of na In the fame issue in which it gives front page publicity to Mr. Mlc- kenzie Klng's allegation that the Bennett policies have "stifled" Canada’s trade, the Toronto Globe. leading Liberal newspaper, pub- lishes the following despatch from its Ottawa correspondent: _ “Canadian farmers have benefit- ed to the extent of nearly $5,000,000 this year to date, as compared with last year, through the re- opening of the United states mar- ket to Canadian cattle. “Total exports of Canadian cat- tle. whether for improving of stock, for dairy herds or for slaughtering, have nearly trebled from the 28,819 head shipped in the first half of 1934 to 84.728 head exported in the first six monthsof this year. "In value this export movement increased by more than $3,000,000 from $1,843,668 last year to $4.958,- 449 this year. “Exports of beef have likewise greatly increased, those to the United Kngdom from 1,756,500 pounds last year to 2,487,000 pounds this year, and those to the United States from 44.700 pounds to 4,- 604,400 pounds." ` i KING AND 3RD PARTIES One 'of the curious misstatements made by Mr. King in his broadcast addresses was to the affect that third parties in Canada had ln- variably originated when Conserv- atives were in power. One wonders how the leader of the Opposition has the audafity to put forward such an assertion. A Toronto exchange recalls that it was while the Liberals were in power in Ontario. that tho Patrons of Industry and the Protestant Protective Association developed. In the election of 1894 fourteen Patrons and two P.P.A.'s were re- tumed to the Legislature. In 1919 under disturbed post-war conditions the U.F.O. slipped into power for a term, but with the Conservatives in oilice the number of U.F.0. and other irregular members fell from 58 in I-922 to seven-in 1984. ` In the federal field it was under the Unionist Government, partly Conservative and partly Liberal. that the Progressives- originated and mustered a strength that gave them and other independents, in the general election of 1921, a post- war strength of 71 members-a force .which has since dwindled away until today it is only 22. The fact is that notwithstanding its pretentlon to the contrary, the Liberal party has always lagged behind the Conservative party in promoting and enacting social and economic reforms. Hence it is that eager radicals from time to time have split off from the Liberal party and formed parties of their own, though it is true, cf course, that they have also drawn from the strength of the Conservative party. The tendency still holds true. It is because Mr. Mackenzie King is tied hand and foot to the utwom ideals of the Manchester School that the anti-Government vote in the present general election, instead of going to the Liberals, is split up into three, four and nve sections.
