These cater pillars pass the winter in & torpid eondi- tion near the surface of the ground, and suddenly for some reasen vhich has not yet been discovered, crawl up On the sur- face of the snow, where eventu- ally they perish or are destroyed by birds. @n the whole I think you are to be congratulated on this strange occur- rence, for had these caterpillars mot ap- peared during the winter they certainly would have done much harm next spring to grassand grain crops, whereas now probably the greater number of those which appeared will die. Intensity of cold does not injure insects very much if atallualess they are disturbed in their hibernation, but it is knewn that if insects when once in hibernation are disturbed and revived many of them die. I wonder if there are anv of these caterpillars still to be found. If so I should like very much te get some, and they would come safely and easily by mail if putin asmall and tight tin box without any holes, I am writing to Mr. Weeks. With kind- est regards. Yours very truly, J. PLeroaer It isnot improabble that the worms nav ve be‘destroyed by the action of frost. But in any case our farmers at the west ward and in all other parts of the Province ought to loo's out for the pest and prevent itsepread in theearly spring. I[t brown worm a little larger than the goose- berry saw worm with eixor eight strong legs forward. The army worm is an ugly isa customer and not halfas ugly as danger- ous. + -— MURRAY HARBOR NOTES: Rev. W. C. Matiews has started a bible class here which meets every Tuesday night. With three thaws a week and a8 many snow storms, besides every variety of weather thrown in for filling, our wood- haulers are not having an enjoyable time.
