Evening | Ni irs Craze for Gum Benzoin. “As we are speaking of erazes, let’me tell you of a very amusing craze that developed rignthere sin St. Paul in 1869,” said a druggist to a Pioneer press man. “Nearly all the druggists keep a little gum benzoin on hand. At the store where | was then employed we had about ten pounds. There was, ordivarily, very little call for the article, but all of a sudden there sprung up a great demand for gum benzoin. Ladies fairly poured into the store, each to order one ounce of gum benzoin and half a pint of whiskey. Druggists in various parts of the city sent around to us for supplies. We didn’t know what to make of it. The 10 pounds soon gave out, and we had to telegraph east for more. Inside ofa month, 1 pre- ‘ume, at least 500 pounds of gum_ben- zoin were sold to ladies in this city. Then the craze let up nearly as sudden- ly as itcame on. When we got at the bottom facts in the matter, we found ihat there had been a woman here from the exst lecturing to females only, aod she had recommended a mixture of gum benzoin, whiskey and water for the complexion. —-—- A Fine Rebuke. \ minister once told me of the fine rebuke he got from Chalmers. He had Visited a man On his death-bed who was delirious, and returning home met Chal- mere. “Well,” said he, “did you pray with him ?” *‘No, he was delirious; but I prayed with the family.” “Ah! you did very wrong, sir. Who knows but that some old train of thought might bave been stirred up by the tones of a familiar voice!’ You did very wrong, sir.” In that region Chalmers was one of the greatest mea of our country.
