MORE TAXATION. — ere Tae Pireau Government has given no- tice of a resolution to change the basis of taxation levied upon insurance companies, telegraph companies, express companies aud other incorporated companies, associ- aiiovs and brewers, This, ef course, means an increase of the rate. A depu- tation ef insurance agents, etc., waited upoo the Premier this morning, but re- ceived no satisfaction about the matter. It is rumored that the increased rate of taxation ie to be 50 per cent. ‘The burden of this increase wiil inevitably— in almost every instance—fall upon the shoulders of and upon the public at large— particularly these who pay insurance premiums, upon persons who have property in our towcs. But the Government party have not performed their pre-election promises —and Pineau is in power now. _— A SUGGESTION. Tue official despatches teil us that Pre- toria has fallen and thatthe British are in possession Of the Beer capital. So far as we can judge, this means, practically, the ending of the war. There is some talk cf a guerilla warfare, but that cannot last long. The tame talk was indulged in when the Southern Confederacy col- lapsed in 1865. We Prince Eilward Islanders have a ; special interest in this war as some of our best and bravest have given their lives in South Africa in defence of the Empire. In some form the memory of these men tbould be perpetuated. A fitting mem-~ orial would be a monument on Queen Square, the centre of the Island Capital. Let us put it there. Let the monument be erected by the voluntary contribution of the people of al! parts of the province, in memory of our dead heroes. a —The Patriot says that Pineau says that he didn’t write the Ottawa letter to which his name was appended.§T bis etate- ment will be taken for what it is worth, viZ., BOtbing. PD ee —What bueiness has a Governmert which has lost the confidence of the people, aud only exists by the vote ot a political treitor, to increase the rate of taxation ? —_— DIED. At Darlington, P. STORE. LAST NIGHT'S PARADE. _i| The celebrat'ng !ast night was on a com- paratively quiet scale though the numb rcf peepie who lined the march was very large’ The procession was composed of Nos 1 and 2 Cos. Artillery, Engineers and 82nd Baitilion. These left the drill shed shortly after 8 o’elock, and jomed the Boy’s Brigade on Queen Street, between Kent and Grafton streetf. From here they marched through the principal streets. About 9 o’clock they lined up along mar- ket equare on Grefton Street. Three cheers were given for the Queen and three for Lord Roberte, the bands playing “God Save the Queen” and “Soldiers of the Queen.” The Boys’ Brigade then marched past the militia, the different companies going to their respective armoriee, while the militia marched to the drill shed. Before dispersing Col, Moore addressed the militia and thanked them ‘or the,turno- out. He stated that probably time the men would appear would be at the home-coming of the men in South Atrica, when, be hoped and &believed, ao even larger number would do honor to the occasion. Last evening, before the parade, the Highland Brigade was presented with a Scotch flag by Mr, James Paton, which wili be the company’s colors, A coach and four, gaily decked with flage, was a prominent feature of the procession. Georgetown celebrated the capture of Pretoria. The echool children were given aha'fholiday. In theevening a display of fireworks took place. ~~ the next | | 1882. He isa prominent young Orange- HON. JAMES R, MCLEAN, VS. SIR LOUIS DAVIES. Sir,— The Hon. James R. McLean will not admit thet the Conservatives got the sum of $500,000 from the Dominion for this Island in 1887, I presume the Island statesmen would be surprised to learn that Sir Louis Davies is Of the opinion that they did get it, and he cannot be charged as likely to give any undue credit to the Tory party of the Is~ land. The financier of the Public Works Office may possess come occult knowledge bearing on the new patent process for produciog aturplus, but I fear this is the limit of uis powers in matters of finance. Every one knows the $500,000, referred to below by Sir Louie, was not paid over, and if this sum 18 not to our credit, it is not iikely the $20,000 increase in the annual eubsidy would te paid. Sir Louis madethe statemert in the House of Commons in the cession of 1895 On the question of branch railway exten- sion in F. KE. Isiaod, brought up by A. C. McDonald, E-q. Tne followingis an extract from ibe speech of Sir Louis, :eported in Hansard. ‘“* The Dominion has expe uded on rail- ways and canals beyond whatit told the Island Government it wou!d expend when it entered into tre terms of Union, the sum of $125,500,000. What haye our people, numbering 110,000, to do with that expenditure. Practcally they pay one- f rtiech of the burden, which wil] amount to $3,000,000 odd.
