It is estimated that 3 per cent of the population to 3. great- er or lesser degree is in this category. Nearly all of them can be trained to do simple tasks but specialized teaching techniques and facilities must be utilized. EXCELLENT WORK At present there are two teach- ers, Miss Jacqueline Cummiskey and Miss Elizabeth Coyle, both of whom are doing excellent work with the children. A child with an I.Q. of under 70 is considered retarded (100 is average). It should be noted that those children in the 60-70 group can usually be helped in their school work to a degree by special auxiliary classes in the public schools. Most of the chil- ing classes held at West Kent School are more severely retard- ed being in the I.Q. range of 50 or less. However. these children can all be trained to some degree and with patience and proper techni- ques, positive results are ob- tained. Thus, the Canadian Legion, which recognized that these more unfortunate children could be helped, entertained the idea that such a class was necessary. here. In contributing to such a worthy cause the Legion feels that the benefits to worried and concern- ed parents and to the children themselves are all part of their idea that service to humanity is the best work of life.
