Nov. 1.-The sub-cnnimib tee of the Cabinet, Hon. C. J. Doherty, Holi. T. VV. Crothers and Hon Robert Rogers 'to whom has been delegated the delicate tnnk of dealing with the question of the increased cost of liv- ing, have been busy for the past. few days working outthe details of the new legislation. The Cabinet has had the order-In-council under considera- tion and with. a very few changes will be ready for adoption. The power ‘to be given municipalities to take action against combines and other agencies which unduly increase the cost of the necessaries of life is the feature of the legislation. As proposed' it is drastic. It will enable municipalities to se- cure full information from companies operating witllln its borders, as to prices, cost_of ops-rating, paid-up capi- tal, waitered stock, etc. It will enable a municipality -to send an accountant into the ofilce of a company to secure this information from the tirm's books or get it from the officers of the_ coni- pany on the witness stand. A new phase of the situation has de- veloped' which will undoubtedly pmvo of great. value in assisting the govern- ment and' municipalities to get at thc seat ot the trouble. Retail grocers' associations and others have- acquaint- edthe Minister of Labor with the fact that wholesale houses are dictating the prices at which goods tbley sell shall be retaiied. While this is not new to many people it has neverbcell known oiiicially and the evidence vol- unteered will make oiiicial action eas- ier. What will help most, however, in the opinion of this authorities here will be the discovery of the names of the individuals who hrvo been increas- ing prices unduly. Publicity is To- garded as likely to be the dominating ilgure in keeping the prices down to TEN DERS . Tenders will be received by the undersigned Executors of the late Patrick.Brennan of Kensington, up to Nov. 15th, 1916 for his real estate property. Consisting of dwelling house, barn-etc. Also a portion of land suitable for building lots or other purposes.
