IL--NO, HT Gladstone and Northcote. | Telegraphic despatches dated London, Oct. 4th, says:—Gladstone replying to au address presented to him at Pen Maeumawr, yesterday, referred to the question of procedure in, the Commons. He said the House could hever meet the tremendour calls upon its energies unless it could shake off all timidity and fear of cant phrases and set itself resolutely, to the task of bringing procedure into har- mony with the calls upen it. Referring to Egpytian affairs Gladstone said he thauked God for the success of the Brit- ish in Egypt. He thanked the army there and its skilful geveral. The war had proved that the army was composed of meu as brave as their forefathers every where. The war had been car:ied out from love of peace and oo the prineiples of peace. In concluding Gladstone | said he trusted that Egypt would . agaim be prosperous and happy. . His reaiarks were received with prolonged cheers. ‘A telegram from Glasgow on the same day informs us that Sir Stafford. Northcote, in aspeech there to-day, said he believed the Eyyptian war vnunecessary and un- justifiable, Had the Government made a firm stand at the commencement it might have been averted. _-. The Packet, of Orilla, Ont., has the following:—The question of the aboli- tion of the Legislative Council is exciting much discussion in Prince Edward Island- the Grits working night and day to maiu- tain the second Chamber. The Sum- merside Jowrnal the most abusive of the Opposition newspapers in the Province, has the following:—*Tue Exam’ner gives us a second instalment of its cut- and-dried platitudes about Ontario hav- ing but oue Chamber, as a reason why this province should have but one. The cases are entirely different, as we shall elsewhere prove, premi-ing here that Ontario has a court of General Reference which costs much more than our Legis- lative Council.” This is news indeed, and is an illustration of the adage that ove must go from home for that cor- modity, It is strange that if there is such a thing as a ‘Court of Genera Refer: uee,” the people of this Province should have remained igeorant of its existence. Oo | The Situation in Egypt. The Sun’s London special dated Oct. 1, says:—The situation in Egypt is most - embarrassivog. On the day before the shooting he fiourished a revolver tireateningly, Mrs. Vermilyea took it from him and hid it. Hovey vowed to be revenged. He pawned a coat on the following day, aud with the money thus obtained bought a pistol. He coneccaled this, in his pocket, and returving to his sister-in- law's house, shot her. His own child died of fright. Yet he boasted of the crime, and when he heard the jury’s ver- dict he said, sneeringly, ‘*That’s just the verdict 1 expected | ” ¢ >_>. Of lnterest to Lumbermen. Strong representa- tiovs have failed to iudace the British Government to take any action in»the matter. It seems that the duty has been imposed in retaliation for the high British wine duties, A St. John’s paper says :— “It is clear that Newfoundland is ade to suffer for supposed wrong on the part of England ; and we can only hope for relief when the two nations arrive at a settle- ment of their difference.” In consequence of the protests of Groat Britain, the United States, and Sweden, the Spainish Government will in all pro- bahility reduce the maximum of the fines imposed for irregularities on vessels arriving at Spanish ports.
