First Aid Home Nursing (st. John Ambulance) Childhood Diseases Balmy spring weather and com- municable diseases seem to go hand in hand. So this is I good time of year to keep an eye on children for early symptoms of measles. scarlet fever. chickenpox, Whooping cough and mumps. Prompt treatment will lessen the severity of the disease and help to prevent complications. How do parents recognize the symptoms of these childhood ail- ments? Watch for these telltale signs. says St. John Ambulance: Red Meaoles: The child will have fever. running nose. sore eyes and B. cough. On the fourth day after these early symptoms start. a reddish. blotchy rash appears on the forehead and behind the ears and then spreads downwards over the body. German Measles: Early signs and symptoms are similar but mildu than red measles. There are us- ually sinall tender lumps behind the ears and down the sides of the neck. As a matter of fact. the rash may be the first sign parents notice. This rash is finer and more pinkish than that of red measles. Scarlet Fever: First symptoms of scarlet fever are fever, headache. sore throat and reddish or furred tongue. This is followed in 24 to '12 hours by a fine, bright red rash which first appears on the neck, armpits and groin. The rash begins to fade in three to seven days and is folioiied by "peeling." Chickenpox: Within ‘.34 hours after the child develops a. mild fever, headache and loss of ap- petite. the chickenpox rash usually appears. This rash first shows up as small. separated. piinplclilte riiisecl red spots which rapidly be- come filled with ii clear fluid. which in turn. becomes pus, breaks and scabs over. In mild cases the. rash may be the first sign of the dis- ease. Whooping Cough: Starts with I fevcr and a cough. They become gradually spasinotlic and the "vi-hoop“ develops about the second week of l.he disease Mumps: This disease is usually easily recognized by the painful swelling in front of and below the ears. But don't forget that the swelling can be in front of and below Just one ear or both. In every case, the patient should be isolated as much .-is possible imniediately ii communicable dis- ease is suspected to prevent spread- ing tiie infection and the family doctor should be called for advice. Household Scrapbook lloliertii Lee. Straw HMS By ; The conversation of smIll boys often contains I great dent of boasting. The)’ derive satlsfactloti from the Ittempts to outdo their friends‘ accounts of sights Ieen. their exploits in games. the pos- sessions and imagined abilities of their parents. This spirit of emulation may be cngngjng in children; but when it persists into adult life it can produce a tragic malformation of character. In the lives of individuals and of no- tions this form nf lnfantilism —- masquerading often as the main- tenance of pr:-stifle ~ destroys harmony and embitters relation- Ihips. The fact that St. Paul in his Christian life, wrote so often I. bout boasting might seem to sue,- guest that he had long suffered from this particular form of ar- rested development. The eighteenth-centui-_v commen- tator Bengel says of a passage in Philippians that it is as if Paul were counting his former advant- ages on the fingers of his hand‘ "Circumcised the eighth day. of the stock of Israel. of the tribe of Benjamin. ii Hebrew of Hebrews. as touching the law. a Pharisee. Is touching zeal. pcrsecutlng the Church. sis touching the righteous ness which is in the law, found blameless." The list would savour of conceit, were it not followed by the qualifying statement: "What things were iziven to me. these have I counted loss for Christ." In other Epistles the same note is struck. In Galatians Paul laid emphasis upon the fact that he had "advanced in the Jews‘ re- ligion beyond many of mine own countrymen, being more exceeding zealous for the traditions of iii.\' fathers“ An assured position had given him authority. He had felt himself to be. like the imaginary Jewish interlociitor of the Epistle to the Romans. "ii guide of the blind. ii light of them that are in darkness .n corrector of the fool- ish. a teacher of babes." But since then he had himself been blinded by an overwhelming light. and now counted himself "less than the lciist of all saints." Yet. in his iiiisilonaijv viork critical attacks could still rouse him to expnsttilatlon: and he would proclaim his eminence. not as scholar and exezete. .but is suf- ferer. The Epistle for sexagesiina contains the famous catalogue of perils endured by land and sea. through prison and shipwreck. It became I‘-’tiul’s ambition as some personal recompense for his for- mer pcrseciitioii of the Church.
