FOR l~`()()D In y`esterday’s issue of The Guardian, we published a report of the address deli- vered by Dr. J, W. Robertson on the food creased production.. We trust the report* has been care1'ully‘read,-that it will be read again and again until the very serious facts which it discloses are fully realized b_v our people. It only requires a realization of the actual conditions to iinpcl us as a farm- ing and food producing community to dot our utmost not only in increasing our pro- duction but in econoniizing even to the point of privation. _ , As frequently said in these columns, it is diliicult for us, in the midst of our abun- dance, to realize that starvation threatens our Allies, but this_ is the bare, unvarnish- ed fact, and as starvation threatens them, just as surely defeat and ruin threaten us. These facts have been placed continuously before us and we have given them l_ittl_e heed; we are haggling over prices, critici~ zing the methods suggested as a remedy. holding back lest someone else should make a dollar more than we out of it. Is, it true as Dr. Robertson solemnly asked,‘ that “if we hear not Moses and the pro- phets( if we hear not the men of_ intelli- gence and vision and responsibility who have placed these matters before us) nei-_ ther would we be persuaded though one ot situation and the dii'e necessity for in-~ our soldiers rose from the dead_and said: “You folks at home are putting in peril all; that I died to save”‘? _ _ i The situation in a nut shell is_ this: un-é less production is very greatly increased,| unless we increase our cultivated acreage to an average extent of live additional! acres per farm, we are going to fall short, Canada cannot supply the amount of_food_ that a careful estimate assures us will be required to avert starvation among our Al- lies and consequent disaster to ourselves.l If we only produce the amount ordinaril_y pro_cluced we are not helping to avert this calamity. ' So serious is the situation that the Le- gislature, as stated in yesterda_\"s report oft the meeting addressed by Dr. Robei'tson,l is going to adjourn for ii week--the wecki of April 15 to 20th, to enable the menibers to place the situation before their consti-, eueiits, to confer with them. to offer assist-1 ance where necessary. and to devise wa_vs_ and means by which this average increase of five aci‘es_per farm may be secured._ ' There are many farmers who will rc- quire assistance; where thcrc is _any _rea- sonable‘promise of assistance _being _indi- ciously used, such assistaiice will be givcn;l where advise is necessary, it will be given; a supreme effort will be made to impress upon thc pcoplc the urgent need of every- body doing much more than usual. We feel sure that the only thing neces- sary is to enable our farmers to realize that this is a matter of life and death; so far this has not been realized. This once under- stood, the farmers will do their part as they have done who have sacrificed every comfort and every hope on the battlefield. It is not necessary that one of these should rise from the dead to tell us our duty. Hun- dreds ofthem have fallen and in falling have flung to us the torch which they had carried even unto death. We can_he1D U10 cause for which they died by putting forth i supreme effort on the farms to produce iore food, in the homes to economize and ii avoid/waste. From their graves they are, billing' to us: “If ye break faith with _us who die we shall not s_l_eep, though poppies blow in Flanders field. . , »'i‘i'ii~: \\".\it I ~ . . » - ‘ _-q--q-1-1# fd -ffiilas/thefsecoiid great drive for Amiens énewerto which is-‘now eagerly await- gqf'-’Wg~,'knowLthetroops ofboth bellger- Those Bolsheviki are very uncertain. »..,_¢nt| are on the ground; that-_th_e_Germans They have now got an idea that it might be ‘ ilpavqdrawnf up over seventy divisionsfoi' a a good thing to fight the Germans, and so final attempt to break through that line of they have turned round and -recaptured steel that is guarding western France, that Odessa and other Russian cities from their L, lin that has bent without breakin ‘ and conquerors.
