Sir,—A contribution anent the famous | bicycle race in Taw Examiver of the llth | inst.. signed “Psycho,” was so utterly ab. | surd as to be altogether uaworthy of not- ice. But notwithstanding its ‘absurdity and foolishness, a response to it and an emphatic endorsement has come from Mr. Wea Dou!) The stupidity of “Psveho's” complaints is only equalled by his ex. | travagance when he — mentions | Messrs. Doull, Young and Rogers as | “tlyers.” Unless he has reference to | them ia a future state, it is incomprehen- sible how he imagines them as being fast- we mean on bicycles. Now, Mr. Editor, the | bicycle championship of P. KE. Island was lost and won in a perfectly honest and levit | way in the last race betwixt Moore and Davies. Davies held the championship of P. E. Island, which he had won in the regular and legitimate way in a regularly advertised race on the Charlottetown | Driving Park, and held it until i heaten by Moore. Now Moore | holds the championship of P. KE. Island | For itis well established and duly re- | cognized law, in all contests, that to defeat | the champion is to win the championship [t is not necessary( as Doull, “Psycho” | and “Charlottetonian” appear to think) to defeat every contestant from the mean- | ext and most contemptible charlatan up It ill becomes Mr. Doull to disparage Mr. __ Moore as the winner of the trophy, | and his comiemptuous reference to brute | force is characteristically childish. Brute | foree ! Pluck, sinew endzrance, and intelli- gence rather did it,and not brute force. But in the eyes of Mr. Doull the “laurels are j petty” and the “cup of no value.” How can laurels be “bard won” and “petty 7” | There is a certain species of fruit which | Mr. Doull, “Pyscho,” ete., have been | masticating, namely, sour grapes; and these | Appear to have left a very acid flavor on their teeth, for they are all on edge and ' | j : plainly visible. CoLumBia - GENTLEMEN VS. PROFESSIONALS. Six,—All true lovers of sports and pas- times must feel grieved at the mercenary spirit manifested in the letters of our wheelmen that have appeared in public print. If our wheelmen were profess- sionals no one could complain of their de- sire to gain money, Or money’s worth, by their trade; but as they pose as gentleman riders, or amateurs, the case is different. Amateurs from pure love of manly sport compete for honors, and usually sinal] memento. : some In older times runners, wrestlers, &c., trained steadily for months and strained every nerve and muscle in order to gain a wreath of leaves. To-day ‘elevens’ practice for months and afterwards travel perhaps hundreds of miles, to compete for honor and a cricket ball worth about two dollars; yachtsmen fit out their boats at very large expendi- ture to compete for a pennant worth no more; amateur athletes walk, run, row, swim, play racquets, pitch quoits, &., for cups, medals, badges, ribbons, Kc., the symbolical value of which by far exceeds the intrinsic worth. As symbols they are highly valued and kept as heirlooms— even though, intrinsically, they resemble a trade dollar. Therefore, it ill-becomes any amateur to epeak with contempt of the “pewter mug,” orto complain that the prize is, of itself, not sufficient remuner- ation for the labor expended to procure it. Those who desire to make money out of sport are professionals at heart, and ought to be ruled out or expelled from every amateur club. Aw AMATEUR. —_- Marriace Betts.—Miss Annie Belle McMillan, of Wood Islands, and Mr. Mardock G. Anderson, of Newton, Bel fast, were united in marriage at the residence of Mr. John D. MeMillan, Richmond Street, on Wednesday evening. Rev. Mr. Corey was the officiating clergyman. The bridesmaids were Misses Mary G. and Ina MeMillan, and the groom was supported by Mr. Samuel A. McLeod, of the firm of Moore & McLeod. The bride is a daughter of the late Captain Neil McMillan, and a sister of Mr. McMillan, of the Patriot staff. The happy couple left yesterday morning by early train for Boston, followed hy the good wishes of hosts of friends in which Tae Examryer heartily joins. Srockx Farm Srocxk.—The sale of stoek at the Stock Farm took place yesterday afternoon, beginning at one o'clock, and was conducted by Mr. Beairsto. There was a good attendance of farmers from all sections of the Province. The cattle were sold as follows, John Smith, $32; Albert Boswall, $32; B E Wright, $12; John Richards, $50; D Murchison, $26; Wm Millar, $19; Alex Irving, $25; H Hyde, $16; H McGregor, $19; Alex Irving, $9.50; John McKinley, $31; Hon TW Dodd, $35; Edmund Clay, $50; Joseph Stewart, $42; Saunders & Campbell, $36. Nine hogs were sold at prices ranging from $3 to $11, and 21 sheep at from $4.25 to $13.25. pons kee Aut Rieut Acatn.—Mr. Whytal, who disappeared so suddenly and mysteriously from Halifax last week, and who was thought to be dead, nas turned up all right, greatly to the relief of his family and friends. He says he went on a visit to the country, aud stopped there longer than he intended. ioisiiinidenes Tae Court or Cuancery which was to have been held on Tuesday next, in the | case of Blue vs. MeFadyen is postponed | until Thursday next at 11 o’clock, a. m. —_- On his arrival home from a tour of in- spection extending over the entire line to the coast, Engineer Peterson of the C. P. R. reported the lines to be in splendid con- dition. As evidence of the high standard maintained he pointed out that the special train bearing Mr. Van Horne to the coast | attained a speed in every section of sixty miles an hour.
