LONDON, Feb. 12.-'rue Briuslll army in France is now making use of heavy llowitzers, which, according to with the expeditionary force, have. proven superior to the heavy German’ gulls. These howitzers, he states. were used in successful attacks on German positions in the brick fields south of La Bassee Canal, a week ago to-night. Our heavy howitzers took part in this bombardment. Tile oflicial eye-witness nays: Their efforts were being directed against the railway triangle. Bombs of these pieces and tho detouations of their shells were heard twenty miles away above the roars of other artillery, while to those close at hand the shrieking of the great projectiles through the air was most impressive, as were the volumes of smoke and debris thrown up. Tile effect of the lydiite shells was truly terrific as they burst among the brick stacks creating greiit havoc among the enemy. One house was literally blowll bodily into the air. The assault was launched against a strong position held by the Germans. Ollr storming columns rushed the works from three sides at once and had very little difficulty in capturing it with ilttlc loss. . As the prisoners afterwards slated, the noice of the bursting shells was so great and tho clouds of dust with which the defenders werc surrounded were so thick that they did not ob- iate. At the same time the trenches to the north of this point ulld between it and the canal were stormed by another party. By securing these noints we were enabled to occupy continuous lines southwards fronl our forward position on thc canal, which formed an advantage to our position in front. of the brick fields. We cap- tured nineteen unwounded prisoners, in addition t.o many wounded, trench mortars and machine guns. The Ger- mans .ieft seventy dead on tho ground, while our casualties were insignifi- cant. The Germans, however, showed no disposition to accept this reverse. for in the early hours of Feb 7th. in a body they advanced along the canal bank, shouting out: “ Don`t sllool, we ~.~.~-~v- _.M SINGER WORKS ON FULL TIME AGAIN l~}LlZAlil<]Tli, N. This form of strate- gem, unfortunately for the enemy, bu lost its novelty. Our men held their fire until the supposed sappers were but a few yards away, then opened with la. machine gun, with the result that the “engineers” fell back, leav- ing thirty dead on the field. In the afternoon another attack was attempted, but it melted away under our artillery fire and did not come to close quarters. The great feature in recent lighting has been the accuracy oi ollr artillery fire. On one occasion our guns accomplished the feat of blowing the Germans out of the trenches they were occupying on an embankment, though it was only forty _yards from that which we were hold- ing. On Feb. ti most of the success was due to ollr shell tire. Tile wllole area, both behind and immediately in fmat,_ol .ills trenches we now hold, was found lo be littered with bodies of hundreds of Germllla killed in various tights since January 25th. Our artillery are here obtained such ascendancy that after the assault 6! that day ollr troops were actually able io put up barbell wire ontanglements ill front of their trenches in broad day- light without being fired on by the enelny’s infantry. Tile prisoners captured here are despondent and nluch shaken.
