Gammel! denies MeLellan’s However, the Court 18 to Now, I am told the estate THE VALUE OF & Mrs. atory in to/o. decide as to its truth. ) that although the value of at roved is the first will was under $6/,- 000. that the estate—which consists al- mortgages and real ‘lisposed of to» that sum, and most alto, ether of estate—would 1OrTow, nearly that quite a sum, and that qaile a sum ta knewn to be werthless— ‘ not i ealize patina vert was put in the estate to make Il look large. If the estate was turned into cash to-morrew I do not believe $50,000 would be realized. Now, supposing Mr. McLellan wins his suit tor $17,000, the sum to be divided among the heirs will 34 O00, instead of $65,000, and only be $ : ‘ . receive $34,000 Mrs. Garame!! would less than nothing. BUT ON THE OTHER HAND. the heirs say that Mr. Gammell worth all the way up to $300,000, and that Mrs. Gammell has the balance in eash io her possession, or under her eovtro!, between the sum he was really worth, and the $67,000 proved in the first Will. and the ‘residue’ would be ao immense fortune to her, after all the bequests «re paid. There are several peeuliarit es inthe last M il], but as these will come out in evidence, | need not mention them here. Five weeks aco Mrs. (tammell returned from Scot- a Her surprise on hearing of the existance of this second Will can be better imagined than deacribed. She immediately pronounced the alleged second Will to be a base iraud, and Mr. Gammell’s alleged signature a clever fergery. The story that Mr. Gammell’s was land. sudden death was the effect of poisoning | was industriousily and widely circula-? ted to excite public feeling; and day after day was fixed jur the body to be exhumed and examined. But the lat- ter ceremony has not yet takon place. In a letter in the the North Sydney Herald Mvs. Gammell invites the fullest and most searching investigation pos sible, and says the soener it is held the quicker sie willbe completely exoner- ated, from the frightful crimes with which she has been so freely charged. She is evilently prepared to fight it out te the bitter end, being confident of success. ‘he other party are equally sanguine of success, and are also pe- pared to spend large sums in getting possession of ihe money they believe was left to them. The contest will re- ault in a big haul for the lawyers, who are sure to come in ahead onthe‘ home stretch. THE CASE BEFORE THE PROBATE CoURY. SypneEy, Sept. 18.— The excitement over the Gammell will case is increasing. The case has now been been before Judge Tremain for three days. The three witness to the alleged last Will and Testa mert— Daniel Johnston, Alex. Gordon aiid thomas MeLelian, have been examined, and their evidence. under a severe ¢)oss-cXamination, bas not been materially shakeo. Johnston who was a County Constable, swears that he eailed at McLellan’s house in April, 1879, te serve an execution on McLellan and that while there, he was invited_n- to another room, in which were Gam- mell and McLellan. He saw Gammell sign a document which he (Gammell) declares was the last Will and Testa- mont. Cammell ordered him to wit- ness his (Gammell’s) signature and he did so. Alex. Gerdon and Thomas Me- Lenoan were also present. Gordon and Johnson swear that they saw Gammell sign the paper and they witnessed it at his request. McLellan was the witness. Rermedy for Hard Times.
